germinating P.Viridis seeds
    #3061826 - 08/28/04 12:18 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Does anyone have any experiance with this?

Erowid says
Soak the Psychotria viridis seeds for about 15 minutes in a mild bleach solution (2 Tbs bleach in a cup (8 oz) of water). This will help keep them from molding during their long germination period.
Rinse and soak the seeds in clear water for 12 hrs.
Plant seeds in potting soil about 1/4 inch deep (8 mm).
Put the whole pot in a ziplock bag for mini-greenhouse effect.
Keep the temp around 70-80 degrees F. (22-28 degrees C.)
Keep out of direct sun.

Does anyone recomend anything different?

thanks

 is a great method, and the plastic bag is important so that it breaks the period of lethargy.

If you bought the dry p viridis seeds lots of places sell, good luck. You'll need it because those don't sprout or have only a 1% germ rate. Your best bet is to get fresh berries. For that you need to know someone. I just happen to have some growing but they aren't ripe yet. I'd estimate it will be around Nov before they are red and ripe. I'll post when they are available. Even with ripe berries it takes a month or two usually to get them to come up. With dry seeds,... maybe 6 months, maybe never. I tried germing a batch a couple years ago and none came up.

berries, whole berries, fresh or a bit old are good enough and i've seen very good germ rate, specially on fresh, it just takes a bit long to germinate - like more than a month. or two. or 3. keep on watering when it dries and some day they'll pop out like crazy... just keep watering even after your hopes are gone.
i have never had any success on dried seeds... not even using erowids method.

I also have some berries growing. It takes a good long while before these things ripen. I swear last year it took about six months before they were ripe!

I am trying Ringworms leaf cutting tech for propigation. Just a little experiment.
You take a nice matured leaf break it along the spine in a few places and plant it in some soil or some type of media (he uses pine bark mulch).
water it regularly, after some time the breaks in the spine will act as nodes and roots will grow from them.
After a few months a small sprout will grow from the leaf. At this point you carefully remove the sprout from the rooted leaf and plant it in it's own container.
Apparently you can grow about 20 or so sprouts from one leaf. It just takes a while!

I'm experimenting with one leaf to see if it will work. I'll keep you guys posted!

entheoindole, I've done that and it does work. It just takes a long time. Usually figure 3 to 5 months from start to plants up and on their own. It's good to keep a dome or plastic wrap over the rooting leaf to keep it moist.

I live in a subtropical climate. It stays pretty humid around here most of the time. I'm not to worried about it staying moistened.

It's been sitting in the potting soil for over a week and has lost no color or wilted in the least! Seems to be working pretty well!
