Savlia cuttings EPIC (lets END the confusion)
    #3062189 - 08/28/04 04:12 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Last year I took cuttings and they failed.

I think most of the problem had to do with the fact it was winter and I was trying to root cuttings inside.

So, summer is almost over and I am thinking I should take cuttings soon before it gets to cold.... its already getting a little chillier and damp.

Ok, I thouhgt it would be cool if in this thread everyone gives their ideas about what they find works when making sally cuttings and what doesnt.

I have heard of using rooting hormone and striaght water, and rooting hormone and dirt, and also both of those WITHOUT rooting hormone.

Ok, my cuttings will be made by clipping JUST UNDER the a node, and the leaves above that removed. (I think)

I am going to make the cuts with clean scissors , then dab them(cuttings) in some rooting hormone and stick them in the dirt.

How many weeks before I have roots??? (1-2.... I hear)

What about temps??? outdoors???

I will mist, and even use a humidity dome if I have to, but its pretty wet outside lately, will I need the dome?

Thanks, and lets make this the thread that ends all the confusion surrounding this magical plant. wink.gif

Be careful not to give tomuch humidity. It can cause rot pretty easily.

what works:
to pinch off and root 'suckers';
to root in soil (pot, indoors, humidity tent at your judgement);
rooting hormone (don't exaggerate);
to put a baggie full of good drt and water around a stem for rooting;
node is essential;

what doesn't works for me:
to root in the water (they usually rot, not even with rooting hormone);
to try to root long cuttings;

Hey, would you happen to know where to get some living Salvia plant (not just a cutting)?  www.iamshaman.com use to have them available but it seems that they make stop offering the live plants from now on :frown:

you can very easy make salvia cuttings.

cut the stem just above a place where the leaves come from the stem. place cutting in water (yes, tap water works). refresh water now and then. preferably a warm and moist location. roots in 1-2 weeks :cool:

wow that's pretty easy, I think I'll try the cutting. The price isn't bad either, 8 bucks at mushmush. Thank you :smile:

I don't think I could stop a salvia cutting from rooting!
As long as it has a node on the top, then they do fine in tap water for me. I just put the bit of stem (usually two or three nodes, but one works) in a glass of water, remove any large leaves, and leave it on my desk. In about two weeks, small roots appear.
So you can cut just above every node on a large stem, so that you have lots of stem sections of about 6" length with a node on top, put them all in water, and in a few weeks you can have ten new plants...
Maybe the really nasty high levels of chlorine in my tap water help to kill bacteria etc which might otherwise cause rot..?
Something I have thought might work OK is to root cuttings before you cut them. If you tie a bit of cotton wool around the stem just above a node, and keep it damp with a bit of water each day, then the stem should form adventitious roots into the damp cotton wool. Then, when the roots have formed, cut the stem in a suitable place, and put the cutting in soil...

Mushmush doesn't sell cuttings, they are tissue culture plantlets.

From what I gathered from the description and the pictures they had, the thing already has roots, or am I mistaken?

I am only assuming vancouver has the same weather we have right now. if so i wouldnt do outside, and if you do do it in a shelterred area. its pretty windy and wet right now, and i really dont think they would survive very well while going through all that stress and trying to make roots. maybe in a non-windy under a roof proch/deck type thing? my 2 cents.

Yeah, they have roots. However it's not a cutting and you can not treat it that way either. It will need to learn how to survive in a non-sterile environment with much lower humidity and how to photosynthese their own food (TC plantlets only FS at 10% of their normal capacity, they get most of their nutrients from the growth media). They are very fragile beings before hardened off and have to be handled with great care, for example never touch the stem as you have to assume that every part of the plantlet that you touch, will die.

I've never had a problem with cuttings, I cut on a slant with a utility knife blade thats been cleaned with rubbing alcohol, put in a cup of filtered water, and leave it in my humidity box for up to 2 weeks.

WHAT I DID LAST NIGHT..................

Cutting #1 a small cutting with little leaves was placed into a 10 once shot glass(maybe more :wink: ) and suspended in such a way(from a twist tie) that almost the entire stem was in the water, yet the leaves sit above.

Cutting #2 was placed into some rooting hormone, and then directly placed into a samll plastic cup with coir in the bottom.
Then a small CLEAR glass was placed over the plastic cup, forming a neat looking little dome. :laugh:

Cutting #3 was cut larger then the others, and was dipped into rooting hormone, and then placed into a cup with coir, however, cutting #3 uses a ziplock storage  bag (large ones!) as a humidity dome.

ALL CUTTINGS are rooting under a small fish tank fluorescent,which produces a light, mainly in the BLUE spectrum.

Thanks for the advice everyone. :laugh:
(I will report my results)

You cannot fail! :cool:

And remember...  She LOVES the humidity tent/dome. If you'll want to remove it, it will be hard  :cuss:
