Having an ego lets you distinguish self from non-self. This is important at dinner time so as you don't eat your own hand.

Good question. I said that as a joke at first so didn't really think it through. Now that I think about it, because humans have evolved to rely on their conscious ego so much for everything at the expense of other forms of consciousness, we wouldn't be able to function properlly without it.

I have heard of one microorganism that in certain conditions, eats itself. You have to wonder how other organisms have a sense of self and not-self, especially those without a nervous system. Is it purely chemical, or is there some other form of consciouness that permeates throughout the universe? Probably chemical.

Ego is the opposite of Soul.

Soul is what comes from a compassionate heart, ego is what comes from the head.

What? You're going to have to explain that one.

Quote:

Soul is what comes from a compassionate heart,...

Huh? So Adolph Hitler had no soul? What the hell is soul anyway? (not the musical art form)

Quote:

... ego is what comes from the head.

Getting closer...

There is nothing wrong with ego, it comes with being a sentient being.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I will explain.

Please keep an open-mind, thats all I ask. I am not going to give you a scientific explanation, as those fail in the areas I'm attempting to reach, beacuse of our very limited knowledge.

When referring to soul, I do not mean any metaphysical body is part, or someway connected to the human physical body. I am referring to Character.

Character is the heart of a person. It naturally builds from hard work, and correct living, and it shows how a person deals with situations they are uncomfortable with. Character is a natural quality, which many people mistake with ego.

Ego is the opposite. Ego is the tool of the mind, but in 95% of people it controls and dominates the mind as a parasite, blocking out our true nature.

Ego is how we wish to appear to others, how we wish to present ourselves. Ego is how we wish to appear to ourselves. It is deceptive, unlike our trueself.

When one comits a selfless act, COMPLETELY selfless, it feeds the Character of man, because it unlocks his heart.

Ego cannot function when love and compassion are truly functioning in ones heart. Ego can only actively be a parasite of the mind when one is asleep, unaware of what is going on.

So, what I meant is that Ego is not just personality. There is MUCH more to ego.

A ego-less, self-less sage could have a defined personality, and yet that is his character, not his ego.

So yes...in my belief Ego is the enemy of man. I do believe that is what "satan" is, when referred to in this bible. It is man's lower self.

Ego is aproduct of fear, and insecurity, and other illnesses.

In a perfect world, no one would have ego. There would be no need, think about it.

Only for 1 or 2 aeons. Then the cicle would start again
[It's kind of a birthright somehow - and that's why I assume, even g*d has one ]
