Definition of love?

i started to wonder what love is after spending a week or so reading about merkaba meditation.
what originally turned me onto it was bob frissell's book "nothing in this book is true, but its exactly how things are."
theres an explanation of a mediation exersice in chapter 12 that says...
"...When you feel calm and relaxed, expand your feelings to a state of love and unity for all life everywhere,......."
this is bassicaly the first step in the procedure, and i didnt think much of it. untill, that is, i tryed to do it...
then i couldnt quite figure out what it was that i was suposed to do..
how do you actively engage in exuding, or feeling love. how do you personafy(sp?) or, visualize, conceptualize - i dunno how to say it; love?
what is love? how does it feel? how do you feel it? especially relating to all life?
- many articles ive read stress this as an important aspect of mediation. tho, none explain its functional meaning.
ideas? help?

personally I think it's largely your own feeling of love, if love differs. For me, it would be sort of feeling on the interconnectedness and equality of *everything* - everyone and every being is your brother/sister, and etc

My definition of love in it's common usage:
An illusioned state of mutual importance between yourself and another of the opposite gender - one who's genetics are favoured for reproduction based upon self desires.
My definition of universal love, to which you were implying:
More of an appreciation and respect towards everything existent. As well, subjectively good intentions with little to no benefit for oneself. This is the true type of "love", in my view.

i could realize the earth/universe is one big symbiotic mess. but what does that do?
isnt love an act of some type? especially the way they described it.

I go on memory of times where I felt profound emotional warmth, closeness in relating, compassion, appreciation, caring concern, awe of the beauty in things, deep respect and admiration for something.
I would summon all of those feelings up through memory and then grab up the whole of all existance and pull it in to that feeling.
Have yourself rise above all of the BS and just realize the divine spark deep within it all, behind the masks, costumes, charades, and shadows. Don't allow for yourself to acknowledge any negative feelings for any part of life. Feel as if it doesn't actually exist in the truth of love.

selflessness right?
wouldnt that be an expression of love? but not love...
and it doesnt really help in the context here, im tryin to understand how to "feel" love.

Well if there's nothing there but reports to follow, then why create another illusion? If you do not experience a sensation relative to others' description of love, then 'forcing' it will not be experiencing it either.
The thing about words, is the lack of absolute values behind them. Love especially, as I tried to show with my post. The selflessness isn't really an act of my view of love, but rather a forfeit to it.

By the truth of love, I mean that when you are able to have those feelings I mentioned and take the whole of it all and pull it into those feelings, you are in the truth of what universal love is.
Memory works well for this!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh surrender.............yesssssssssssss
Thats another way. Consider that vibration of love exists everywhere within and without all of the time to be felt and experienced and then just let go and give into it and let it overwhelm you.
You may have to use your imagination a bit to generate the experience. It is an alterted state (different from the norm) you are producing naturally.

There are so many underlying states existing simuntaneously which create the ripple one relates as the Self. This includes enlightened states, such as the one you described . Our illusions cover them well.

Indeed they do! It's nice to know it's there when I want to give in to it.
