CONTAM???...help please?
    #3059997 - 08/27/04 09:21 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

This stuff popped up seemingly over night - the jars were doing fine, and then BAM!!...there's this fuzzy looking greyish white stuff. It is in 3 of the 10 jars innoculated. I had the jars in a very humid incubator for a couple days and I'm wondering if it was too much moisture sitting in the verm layer???

any ideas?

I've isolated these jars from the rest - if I leave them alone and this stuiff goes away, do you think they'll be safe, or should I just chuck 'em....

I was thinking if it's just a mold, maybe it would...I just can't believe how fast it spread.....if only myc spread that quickly

Okay cornelius, remember i did the same setup as you, except i put mine in this afternoon from the closet. 80% - 10% (12 jars) - in the span of 6 hours...there was moisture between the glass and the myc. - and the color was dampened in a few spots. . . back to Alounacara - bacculis?

here.. i found this posted by anno:
Cobweb mold or Dactylium Mildew (Hypomyces sp.)

A cottony mycelium grows over casing. When it contacts a mushroom, the mycelium soon envelopes the mushroom with a soft mildewy mycelium and causes a soft rot. It is also a parasite of wild mushrooms.
Cobweb mold is darker than mycelium... almost grey as compared to white. The difference in color is sometimes hard to tell for somebody that hasn't seen them side by side before. Cobweb has several other indicators... the one that sticks out is the speed of growth. A small patch the size of a dime will spread to cover an entire jar/casing in just a day or two. Cobweb is also very very fine strands, while mycelium tends to be thicker ropes.
Cobweb mold is favored by high humidity. Control strategies include lowering humidity and /or increasing air circulation.

Leave it for a while, sometimes mycelium will go like that when its colonizing (thin but fast growing) and thicken after time however more than likely you have cobweb.

I have that same exact looking stuff on one of my jars but no mycelium just that grayish stuff. So I set it outside. I think its cobweb mold

Should I keep my jar with the same type of stuff? It is almost fully colonized and its only been 3-4 days. I think its mold for sure

I think its thin mycelium, when it grows that thin it has a similar texture to cobweb however where it starts to thicken you will see a stronger white forming.

Sometimes mycelium will devour substrate very thinly looking like full cobweb contamination.

Patience is the key here, leave it for a few days and you will know for sure. Do not throw out, that is a definite piece of advice. There is a good chance that is mycelium. Especially given the current state of your jar, at this late stage it is especially likely.
