casing soil and caco2
    #3059670 - 08/27/04 09:50 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hi Shroomers Balooners!

Is it true that adding CaCo2 to casing soil (peat/vermiculit) decreases possibility of contamination? And which is better, to make a dry mixture of all 3 ingreadients and then add water or first make wet casing soil without CaCo2 and add it later? I pasteurize my casing soil the way I pasteruize the compost - I dunk it in hot water for 1 hour and let the exes water to drain overnight.

tnx for help!

chalk does not reduce contams, it just improves buffering as myc releases acids.

to make a good mix, i recommend adding at least one (?the finest) ingredient at the end to wet substrate mix, to stop it clogging in lumps.

However, I guess it's better to add CaCo2, as long as you keep the soil airy and not make wet dump clumps. Right?

mycelium releases acids as waste products - basically protons (H+ ions).
this will drive the pH down (out of the myc-preferred zone) unless there is a basic substance there to mop up the extra protons. you only realy need to worry about buffers if you're using an acidic casing mix, like peat.

CaCO3 accepts protons and forms harmless water and CO2.

buffers can be short-term like chalk, or longer term like oyster shell (which only dissolves slowly). again, forget buffers unless you're using peat.
