Why Americans Must Vote For Kerry

By
Norman D. Livergood

If We Don't Defeat Bush II in 2004, This Country Will Go Down the Tubes

Defeating Bush and electing John Kerry President in 2004 must be our number one priority.

Using a series of television ads, the Bush junta is already trying to rewrite history to conceal Dubya's miserable record behind a $150 million mountain of contributions from corporate special interests.

The Bush junta--and the Republican-controlled media--are leveling at Kerry every smear tactic Karl Rove's dirty-tricks brain can concoct. Their multi-million dollar war chest allows them to plaster the air waves with their usual lies and slander.

In the weeks to come, Hannity insanity will mushroom, Un-Fair-and-Un-Balanced O'Reilly will rail against Kerry, and Dennis Miller will ramp up his Goebbels on steroids schtick. All the other TV and talk-radio rabid rightist reactionaries will be out in full regalia, like Halloween, Part 666 meets Day of the Living Dead.

"The Bush strategy is clear. Use wedge issues to divide America. Work overtime to distort John Kerry's record. And use Bush's campaign war chest to try to cover up his failed record."

Mary Beth Cahill, Campaign Manager, John Kerry for President

Each false accusation and lie they level at Kerry must be answered and countered by every sane person alive. Already, Bush's lying Internet video about Kerry taking huge amounts of special interest money has been conclusively shot down. And one of Bush's first campaign ads which tried to emotionally exploit 9/11 backfired.

We must make it absolutely clear that the only choice in November 2004 is between Bush's brand of militaristic imperialism-police state-crony capitalism and John Kerry's sane military, economic, and civil liberties policies benefitting all Americans.

Whatever it takes, we must awaken American voters to the realization that Bush has done--and will continue to do--everything to devastate our way of life.

Bush:
Took us from the biggest surplus ever to the biggest deficit ever

Lied to us to get us into a war for oil and crony contracts (e.g., Halliburton)

Put us into a deficit status which by the year 2012 will be a whopping $2.75 TRILLION!

Reduced household income by a gigantic 1.7%

Created a sagging economy which for the first time in modern history has a decline in manufacturing output

Redefined our foreign policy as militaristic imperialism, with more that 53% of our budget going to Bush's crony defense industry contributors

Destroyed over 2.8 million jobs

Lied to us about tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% creating new jobs

Brought us into an incipient police state where Miami gestapo agents attack peaceful demonstrators, causing injuries and outrage

Americans Find Kerry More Likeable and Believable than Bush II

One of the major benefits we have in John Kerry's candidacy is that he has the personal integrity and strength to defeat Bush soundly in the upcoming election.

To hear the TV pun-dits, George W. Bush is a "great leader" and is more "likeable" than any Democratic candidate could possibly be. A recent CNN/USA Today poll showed--on the contrary--that voters trust Kerry more than Bush to run the economy wisely and also thought Kerry was more likely to make sound decisions about war and peace. Voters rate Kerry more in the political mainstream than Bush, feel that Kerry is more in touch with the problems of ordinary people, shares people's values, and has a likable personality. The poll revealed that an election now would result in Kerry defeating Bush by 53% to 46%.

Enough Is Too Much

The American people--of all stripes--appear to have had enough of Bush's deceptions, fraud, and decimation of Constitutional rights. Even the right-wing National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) recently issued a report warning that 2.3 million US manufacturing jobs have disappeared since 2000. The NAM points out that the United States risks losing "critical mass" in manufacturing.

A recent Defense Department technology-advisory group report pointed out that so much "intellectual capital and industrial capability" has been moved offshore, particularly in microelectronics, that the Pentagon is dangerously dependent on foreign manufacturers to supply its high-tech weaponry.

This February 27, 2004 report seems to point to a very interesting mutiny within the Republican ranks:
Behind Enemy Lines

"I spent last night at a fundraiser for a Republican legislator. It was very interesting to hear most of the attendees bitching about Bush. Most of the griping centered around his mishandling of the economy and fiscal matters, with a not-insignificant portion devoted to sniping at the marriage amendment.

"But what was really surprising was the table talk at the private dinner after the fundraiser. With two exceptions, everyone at the table declared they would vote for anybody but Bush. One of the exceptions was an absolute die-hard Bush supporter, who declared he would vote for Bush no matter what. The other exception was the legislator, who said he wasn?t sure he could vote for Bush.

"Turns out he and many of his fellow Republicans are plenty angry at the president, and deeply troubled at the direction the country is going in.

"Although I can?t divulge any of the details about where this took place, I can tell you that all of the politicians and power-brokers involved are in a must-win state for Bush. If the people who should constitute his base are upset enough that they are considering voting against their own man, what does this tell us about Bush?s electoral chances?"

The Republicans against Bush trend was first seen in the New Hampshire Republican Party primary. Many Republicans decided to skip the formalities and simply vote against the president in the Republican primary. Thousands of these Bush-bashing Republicans went so far as to write in the names of Democratic presidential contenders!

Under New Hampshire law, only Democrats and independents were permitted to participate in the Democratic presidential primary. That meant that Republicans who wanted to register their opposition to Bush had to do so in their own party's primary. One in seven of them did just that, and the president received just 85 percent of the 62,927 ballots cast.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, it is morally treasonable to the American Public."

President Theodore Roosevelt

Those abandoning the sinking Bush ship include Republican policymakers, who in February 2004 wrote a joint letter opposing President Bush?s immigration proposal. The Republican legislators warned Bush of negative repercussions this election-year from Republican voters.

The Congresspersons expressed disdain with the intentions of Bush?s proposal, indicating that they've received a flood of angry letters, e-mails and phone calls from Republican constituents threatening not to support the president?s campaign for reelection. Twenty-three Republican Congresspersons signed the letter, stating that they are taking this action in response to the concerns of constituents. The letter made it clear that if they don?t respond to these concerns, they could jeopardize their own influence and effectiveness in Congress.

This immigration issue could prove to be the entering wedge of political failure for the Republican party in 2004.

Even the Big Money people are beginning to have second thoughts about Bush and the Republican Party as investments tank.

Republicans voted against criminal penalties for CEOs, tougher corporate regulations, executive accountability, greater auditing safeguards, and stronger protections for employee pensions. The chart to the left shows why Wall Street is not pleased with Bush and the Republican Party.

Kerry Has the Courage to Go Up Against the Bushes

In his home state of Massachusetts, Kerry defied party bosses by running for the U.S. Senate in 1984. He beat the establishment favorite in the primary and went on to win the seat he has held ever since. In this and other actions he's taken, Kerry has proved himself to be a distinct "outsider."

It is to Kerry's credit that he has not taken PAC money and that he has the ability to raise enough funds to mount a viable campaign against Dubya, who will receive over $200 million in campaign funds from his corporate bosses.

Kerry chaired the Senate Committee on Drugs, Law Enforcement and Foreign Policy that investigated Bush senior's criminal Iran/Contra conspiracy. This man has proved that he has the guts to go up against the Bushes.

"When a Senate investigation headed by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., turned up more evidence linking contra supply operations to drug smuggling, Reagan's Justice Department moved to shut down criminal investigations.

"The cover-up was aided by the major news media -- including The New York Times, The Washington Post and other prestige news outlets -- which derided the mounting evidence and essentially protected the CIA. That pattern continued through the Kerry investigation, which published a major report in April 1989 documenting numerous contra drug ties through Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica and the Medellin cartel. The major newspapers buried brief articles about the Senate report deep inside their pages and did no significant follow-ups.

Robert Parry, "Reality Bites Back: Contra-Coke Proof," The Consortium for Independent Journalism, July 9, 1998

As a senator, Kerry has had the courage to expose scandals involving the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), the drug-dealing of Panamanian President Manuel A. Noriega and the issue of American soldiers missing in Southeast Asia. Along with Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, Kerry played a crucial role in 1995 in pushing for normalized U.S. relations with Vietnam.

Kerry as the Democratic Candidate Is Our Best Hope to Defeat Bush II

In a nation fast moving toward a total fascistic police state under the Bush junta, we must give our full support to the Democratic Party in general and Kerry's campaign in particular. Yes, there are and have been Democratic leaders influenced by Big Money. But doctrinaire rejection of the Democratic party ignores the fact that Democratic administrations have brought significant benefits to working people in America.

Only if you're completely blinded by a socialist or Democratic splinter ideology can you not see that there is a genuine difference between George W. Bush and John Kerry. The fact that they both have wealth or that they both went to Yale University, 1 does not mean that they share the same beliefs about what America should be.

If you take an honest look at Kerry's voting record and examine what he's done as a public servant, you'll conclude that he has always fought for the interests of working people.

Everything George W. Bush has done as president reveals that he is only for the interests of the ruling plutocracy and will do everything possible to devastate the well being of workers. Even as early as his days at Harvard, Dubya showed himself to be an extreme reactionary.

"At Harvard Business School, thirty years ago, George Bush was a student of mine. I still vividly remember him. In my class, he declared that 'people are poor because they are lazy.' He was opposed to labor unions, social security, environmental protection, Medicare, and public schools. To him, the antitrust watch dog, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Securities Exchange Commission were unnecessary hindrances to 'free market competition.' To him, Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was 'socialism.'"

Yoshi Tsurumi, 2 Professor of International Business, Baruch College, the City University of New York

In the 2004 election, we must defeat Bush no matter what. The only actual party which offers that hope is the Democratic party. And the only candidate that can defeat Bush is John Kerry. Now that Super Tuesday has shown Kerry to be the single viable candidate, splinter Democrats must stop pushing self-aggrandizing non-candidates such as Kucinich, Sharpton, or Nader. Any fragmenting of the Democratic party will only help Bush's re-election efforts. Making sure Bush does not win re-election must be our primary goal.

Thinking Americans, who reject knee-jerk reactions to scare words and unsubstantiated innuendoes from Republican spin-meisters, will find that John Kerry's record of achievements is exemplary and makes it clear that he is looking out for the interest of all Americans.

Kerry opposed and voted against the John Ashcroft (Attorney General) nomination for appointment to President Bush's cabinet.

He proposed a "payroll tax holiday," exempting the first $10,000 of one's income from being subject to a Social Security tax. According to Kerry, this would target tax relief on middle-income and lower-income people by giving every worker a $765 tax cut and doubling that to $1,530 for every two-income household.

Kerry wants to raise the minimum wage along with the Earned Income Tax Credit, so that non-welfare working-class families receive tax deductions.

He co-sponsored original versions of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Bill to ban "soft money" (unlimited donations from corporations, unions, and individuals) and sham attack ads. He teamed up with Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota to present a Clean Money bill that would give candidates the option of financing their political campaigns with grant expenditures from a public campaign trust fund.

Kerry joined a bipartisan effort for meaningful election reform, by cosponsoring Kentucky senator Mitch McConnell's Bipartisan Federal Election Reform Act of 2001. The bill established a Blue Ribbon Study Panel appointed bilaterally by leaders of both major parties in Congress. This panel would supervise federal elections to assist registered voters, oversee accurate counting of ballots, and curb abuses in polling places.

Senator Kerry's record on the environment is second to none and demonstrates unquestionably that he is a candidate for all Americans:

Senator Kerry was given ratings of 100% by both the League of Conservation Voters and the Humane Society of the United States. The Sierra Club has publicly commended Kerry for his environmental record, stating that, "there is no stronger advocate in the Senate for environmental protection than John Kerry."

Kerry recently criticized the Bush administration's mindless dismissal of the Kyoto treaty, which would encourage energy conservation:

"One of the clearest opportunities missed is the environment. America has not led but fled on the issue of global warming. President Bush's declaration that the Kyoto Protocol was simply Dead on Arrival spoke for itself - and it spoke in dozens of languages as his words whipped instantly around the globe. But what the Administration failed to see was that Kyoto was not just an agreement - it was a product of 160 nations working together over 10 years. It was a good faith effort - and the United States just dismissed it. We didn't aim to mend it. We didn't aim to sit down with our allies and find a compromise. We didn't aim for a new dialogue. The Administration was simply ready to aim and fire, and the target they hit was our international reputation. This country can and should aim higher than preserving its place as the world's largest unfettered polluter. And we should assert, not abandon our leadership in addressing global economic degradation and the warming of the atmosphere we share with the other 90% of humanity."

Kerry was one of the original organizers of the first Earth Day in Massachusetts (in 1970), and chaired the National Earth Day board in 1990.

Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, chairs several philanthropic organizations and has instituted honors and awards in fine arts and social activism. As an environmental leader, she has initiated grants for preservation, conservation, and environmental research. She has helped to form many organizations, such as Second Nature, and the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, which promote environmental awareness and activism.

She is also a passionate advocate for educational programming, having worked extensively with PBS. Teresa Kerry is a native of Mozambique, and graduated from universities in Johannesburg and Geneva with degrees in foreign language and literature. She is fluent in five languages.

With the Bush fascist state steadily encroaching on our lives, we must be completely realistic in our life-or-death efforts to oust this would-be dictator. We should consider ourselves most fortunate to have John Kerry as a Democratic candidate for the presidency because he represents the best in American political life. All thinking Americans must endorse Senator John Kerry for president because he is the only person who has the experience, drive, and intelligence to beat Bush II in 2004.

This is Edwards.

Former Senator Paul Wellstone. Dirt napping at this time.

Look about 2/3 of the way down.
