The term for this perception of life...?
    #3058330 - 08/27/04 01:29 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

It's been said here or in the S&P forum before I'm sure, however using the search feature for this would take ages to track down.

What's the dictionary term for when one belives everything exists within his/her own mind?

As a student of philosophy ( ) let me answer this.

Nihilism is not the belief that nothing exists, it is more the belief that nothing has a purpose, everything just is, but has no meaning or point. Moral, political, and social values are just subjective beliefs. There is really no true purpose to everything. The only things that give us meaning are the things we create for ourselves. The father of nihilism was Friedrich Nietzsche.

Idealism is the belief that the material world does not exist. It is just a creation of your mind. This idea was set forth by George Berkeley in the early 1700s. He's the guy that said, "Does a tree falling in the forest make a sound if no one is there to hear it?" His answer was no. After all, if everything you experience is really just in your mind (colors don't really exist, the are just your mind interpreting light waves, sound doesn't exist as we know it, it is just created in your mind as it translates vibrations of sound waves, etc.), then without a mind to process and create this sound, it doesn't exist.
