It does gel in the jars, but remelts when I PC it in the petri dish.
I try to use up the contents of the jar, once opened..if not I put the top on loose and microwave.

I usually make a lot more agar than i need at a time.
I pour it in small bottles, just enough to make 8-10 plates.
Then sterilise 30 min. and store them in the fridge.
They stay nice and clean for monts and months.
When needed i just nuke them until melted and pour my plates and sterilise them for 20 min.
Much easier than making new agar as soon as i need some plates.

Does that help you get things done more quickly?

I like to prepare extras so they're ready when I am.

Its not so much that its quicker, but I usually only do 3-4 plates at a time. Its a pain in the ass to get out the scales, agar, etc and then do the math to make 1/4 - 1/2 a batch of agar at a time everytime I want to grow a culture.

Great idea. I've heard of microwaving and pourng premade mix. Seems 5 min. in the microwave does the trick.
