Verm casing layer.....?
    #3058207 - 08/27/04 02:58 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I read in the FAQ that you can use sterelized verm as a casing layer and well,I want to try my hand at casing so I plan on sacrificing one or two cakes for a casing.

Question 1:Can I bake the verm or should I PC it?

Question 3:If bake.what temp and for how long, also should I add water to it before sterelizing,or after?

Tahnks shroomerites!

verm is pretty inert, not much grows on it even straight outta the bag. i do mine in the microwave though.

always moisten before sterilising/pasteurising - especially in the microwave! moisten it to field capacity by gradually stirring it in until water collects at the bottom. then in the oven in a pie dish (200 for 30 mins) or the microwave 95 mins, wait a minute, 5 mins) or in a jar and pc/steam. good to do lots of casing mix in individual containers all at once, and store it. always let it cool before applying it.

good luck dude

Just plain sterilized verm will work for a casing layer and is less likely to contam so it should work well for your first attempt.

You can bake or pc it. It just depends on which way you want to go.
If you pc it just cook it for about 45min at 15 psi in quart jars and you are good to go. If you oven cook it ,go with about 300deg for about an hour in a pan covered with alum. foil.

*Either way ;you want to fully hydrate the verm to full capacity before you sterilize it. In the case of the oven you may want to go ever so slighty beyond full capacity due to the inevitable evaporation factor.

Good Luck!
