Fly Agarics found at smoke spot
    #3054689 - 08/26/04 08:04 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Me and my friend stumbled upon some 50 or so of what we believe to be amanita var formosa. What do you guys think of these? We've got them contained in a box surounded in layers of tin-foil. Will they dry on their own in there if I keep them stored in a dry area (like my garage) or should I think of dehydrating them or cooking them first? Also, anyone have any idea as to how long they can be stored?

answers would be greatly appreciated thanks

Can be stored- must be dried- not with heat- look fine but before you do anything with them post a pic of the bottom of the stem to show what likely will be rings. Won't dry on their own- will rot and turn to shit- put them in a dehydrator or on some towels by a window with the gills turned up and a good fan blowing over them. Good luck but we need a good shot of the bottom of the stem- SBT

there are rings on many of them. My camera is out of battery power so it might take me a bit to find more around the house...any idea as to how long they will keep without roting? Could they go in the freezer and preserve?

how much will amanitas stink up my oven? I think I might dry them by placing them in there at 150-200 degrees. Does that work? I heard a while ago that it does...

they wont at all, in places like the KIWI island, New Zealand areas of the world, they are a commonly eaten food. They eat em by the shitload.

From what I remember cooking them, and I will have to check last years notes, I baked them at 150', but the gold liquid secretion that would come out the bottom of the cap would get redistributed. Ill get back to you in my particular recipe.

I always cooked em fresh.

Start peeling those skins!!!

BEautoful imagery. S Do not smoke the white sklin. Thats urnbban legend. You can smoke the dried mushroom caps and mix them with pot.

Also,

They kinda smell bad when druyying. I sun fry mine like the siberians (Chuckchee, Koryak's and kamchadels do.

mj

Again, A nice photo image.

"Start peeling those skins!!!"
Roger that, I've got like 25 caps with the gills scraped off in the oven (I can only seem to peel a clear skin with the spots on them).

Anybody know which ones are more potent (by size or colour? or is there no way to know?)

thanks!

I'm gonna try smoking some first.

rasjoe2112: You are saying that the skin at the very top of the mushrooms are the most potent? (where it's more reddish)

Would you be able to keep the thread updated with you experience with these aminita var. formoasa's? I have a spot where tonnes grow after a nice rainfall. It has never failed me yet, my spot is a agaric heaven. I am still a little unsure about trying them out and would like to learn from others experiences.
