h2o condensing on casing layer and small caps
    #3053781 - 08/26/04 04:07 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My friend has a casing in her chamber. With the rh @95%+, water has begun to condense on the mycelium. It has been this way for over 1.5 weeks. She sees that there is some overlay and no sign of pinning yet.

The containers are sterilite containers that are about a foot deep. The substrate and casing only comes about half way up. So there is about 6 inches of room from the casing to the rim. She was thinking that because there isn't a steady flow of air getting down to the casing that its condensing becasue of the super humid microclimate in there.

Any suggestions? Her air flow is supplied by 3 aquarium pumps .

Also, are there any environmental conditions that are detrimental to cap size and development?

the humidity is too high, dont mist it for a couple of days and try keeping the humidity at around 80%, good gas exchange will promote larger fruits

there is sufficient gas exchange and she doesn't mist at all.

is she running a humidifier, if so then she should stop for a while, the casing layer will hold enough moisture so the higher humidity is not needed, excessive moisture can also promote contam

have her try fanning it several times per day and not use the air pomps for a few days...

she just thought of something else, her airstones are in the perlite. Perhaps lifting them out so they are just floating will help redice humidity.

The only time you should scratch is if you've got overlay. You just need to fan more often and if there is any "pooling" use a paper towel to wick the water off, you can also wipe excess water off the side walls this will all help in getting the proper RH. Next time all ya need to do is fan more often it's as simple as that! Also initiate pinning as soon as you either patch or if the casing is colonizing uniformly (in the valleys) as soon as you see any myc. The reason for this is that it takes myc a while to switch from veg to generative growth so if you do it as soon as you see it by the time the switchover is comeplete you will have perfect coverage and if you've gotten that casing moisture content to optimum "near saturation" then you will be golden! "Near saturation" is btw the point where the casing just "glistens" without any dripping or runoff (saturation). This is what myc thrives in FYI  GL
IMHO use only one pump and drill some 3/4-1in. holes immediately above the perlite and stuff them with polyfil this will give you very nice results
