I got a florescent bulb fixture which came with a black light, if I just get a outdoor light bulb and stick it in there it would work fine right?

Definitly.

I believe most cubes just need a clue from where the 'sun' is to grow 'upwards'. Stick any fluorescent tube in it and it will work. If you absolutely need to throw cash anywhere, get one of those 'full spectrum' tubes from a plant nursery.

I think any 'cool white' will do.

I know you can stick black light bulbs in a regular flourescent light fixture, so i don't see why that wouldn't work. (I can't believe those bastards at the novelty shop try to charge $50 for a black light fixture when I can get one that will last 5 times as long for 10$) Just make sure you get the right size bulb.
