Iraq loses in soccer semis

The Iraqi soccer team's run at an Olympic gold medal ended Tuesday night with a 3-1 semifinal loss to Paraguay. The Iraqis still have a chance for a bronze, which would be their nation's first medal in 44 years.
In related news, the Iraqi Soccer Coach did not have his hands cut off after this loss. Also, it was reported that the leading scorer's knees remained properly located in their sockets following the game. In addition, the goal tender allegedly retained his eyesight in advance of next year's World Cup competitions. Finally, the waterboy was not forced to spend a week sitting on the Black Chair for mistakenly replacing Gatorade with Powerade.

Already the typical American attitude relating to work ethic has set in. If Uday (or Qusay) were still in charge, things would be done! Instead, these lazy athletes are back to doing such things a "Training without fearing for their families lives". A shame that the Westernization of Iraq has resulted in this so soon.

somehow it will get out that the Americans beat the soccer players because the loss didn't make Bush look good.

No, but his niece was found under a pile of rubble caused by a US bomb. Remember: terroist's bombs = bad; US bombs are built and dropped with more love. The little Iraqi girl died because the WTC bombers were mostly Saudis, but her death will help to stop the terrorists and make us safer. I certainly feel better knowing she will not grow up to sell produce in the local marketplace. *Whew!*

But members of the very successful Iraqi Olympic soccer team beg to differ, blasting Bush's attempt to use their participation in the Games as justification for the US occupation of their country. "My problems are not with the American people," Iraq's soccer coach, Adnan Hamad Majeed, told the Associated Press. "They are with what America has done in Iraq: destroy everything. The American Army has killed so many people in Iraq." His star midfielder, Salih Sadir, agreed: "Iraq as a team doesn't want Mr. Bush to use us [in an ad] for the presidential campaign.... We don't wish for the presence of the Americans in our country. We want them to go away."
These are not anonymous bomb throwers sending notes to the media. These are Iraq's favorite sons, stars of the national sport. Yet they all seem to be saying the same thing: America's military is not wanted on our land. Another team member, Ahmed Manajid, demanded to know: "How will [Bush] meet his God having slaughtered so many men and women? He has committed so many crimes." The athlete added that were he not playing for his country he would "for sure" be fighting in the Iraqi resistance. "I want to defend my home. If a stranger invades America and the people resist, does that mean they are terrorists?" Manajid asked.

Most Iraqis who lived international lives while Saddam was in power were exiles. I wonder how many of these soccer players are returning to that quagmire.
