Help me identify these please
    #3052248 - 08/26/04 06:36 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Hello I?m new to this board. I live on 150 acres on along the Gulf coast and we have horses and cows. I have been hunting Psilocybe cubensis for years. It has been slim picking all year for some reason. Anyway I just got back from the field and ran across these. They were so cool looking I had to pick them and find out what they are. Maybe they are eatable. These were not in the field but in tall grass leading up to the field. There may have been a manure pile there before but I really can't remember. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Basset

Hello and welcome to The Shroomery!
Your mushrooms remind me Lepiota cristata. Not active, not edible, to be avoided as some of the small Lepiotas contain the same deadly toxins as Amanita phalloides.

If it drops green spores, then you have Lepiota molybdites, which is a poisonous parasol. If it drops white spores, then you have an edible parasol; I hear they are quite good but have never tried them.

don't eat those. they're damn sure not psychoactive and will probably result in the worst sickness you've ever known. trust me I watched my brother go through the worst pain of his life after eating a bunch mistaking them for P. cubensis in his ignorant days. they grow everywhere in grass especially in the South and there's usually tons of them. they'll probably make you sick as a fucking dog. good luck.

Shroomydan has it correct - make a spore print. That they were growing in grass is an indicator that they are probably the green spored Chlorophyllum molybdites. If the spore print comes out white, then you're in luck.

Happy mushrooming!
