Christianity and Beards
    #3052109 - 08/26/04 07:12 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

My brother who works at Eagle Ranch, a Baptist Christian home for wayward boys, was forced to shave his beard as it was not befitting a Christian image!

No further commentary necessary.

HA HA JESUS HAD A FUCKING BEARD! LMAO

In the dawn my toes are cold They spread their little trinkets on the ground In the hall By the closet door They creep into my bed without sound On a cube In a plastic egg A hundred fabric figures in a pile See them march Toward me And dance across the floor trippily Little faces keep no track of time Little faces speaking out in rhyme Little faces smiling in my mind Tiny doors For walking through sticky fingers clutch forbidden things the phone For talking through Sinking ships On a foamy sea That tumbles from the motion of filthy Little hands In the dark When eyes are wide listen to secrets that I tell In a ball On tiny beds Or beneath them where the shadow people dwell moon Beams split the night Leave bars of yellow pasted on their faces As they drift into a dream

Yeah, seriously.. considering the traditional Christian portrayal of Jesus has a beard, I don't see why they should have a problem with that...

It is called CONTROL. Uniforms and uniform looks are helpful in indoctrinating (read: brainwashing) people. Why is short hair important for males in the military? Same thing! Individuality has no place in group-think.

Oh c'mon - everyone knows Christians don't grow beards. Only devoted Muslims do that! You don't want him to look like one of them do you?

Although it may appear to be a form of 'control', it serves as a function as well..

When 'dancing' in close proximity to another 'dancer', control over you, by grabbing hold of your hair is eliminated.

By taking a firm grip upon another's locks, you assume a slight advantage over the other by controlling a zone above the other's centre of gravity...  Notwithstanding,  hair is easier to keep a hold on than, say, ears, face, etc..

But these days, where stand-off weapons are more popular, for those cowards who cannot fight one on one, hand to hand,  functionnality has turned into tradition, I would suspect.

Getting back on topic..

I would imagine that beards were popular 'back in the day' due to the significant lack of BIC razors and creams..

LMFAO!!!

Just imagine the razor burn you'd get from that sharp sword !!!!!

He should sue for discrimination, the American way.

That's funny, shaving the beard is considered un-Islamic among Muslims since just about every Prophet had one, from Adam to Muhammad. In Christianity it's even more obvious that Jesus had a beard. I guess for the Christian Conservative, shaving is the conservative thing to do, while Muslim Conservatives grow at least a fist full of beard and wear clothes pertaining to their cultural background (Smaagh for Arabs, Kameez for Indians, etc.) - and if they look anything like a Christian Conservative, with a shave, slacks, nice button up shirt, they are considered Muslim liberals.  :tongue2:

I suppose different organizations have different images to project. I don't think this means anything.

As an attorney, if I want clients to retain me, I have to have a nice car and a nice office and wear a business suit. If I run around wearing shorts and go barefoot and drive a skateboard, it's unlikely I'll be retained. Yet I'm a good attorney.

I don't think it's the Baptists saying your brother is not a Christian. I think they just want to project a certain image due to the way the populace makes generalizations.

How about they start portraying Jesus as a clean shaven skin head guy?

Thats why when Jesus (if he sports the same look as last time) returns most Christians ironically will reject him or consider him the Antichrist. A guy with long hair, a beard, wearing sandals??

Hippy-pinko-liberal- non-conformist!

"Crucify him!!!!"

Yes. And I will probably be taken down halfway through my quest by an elf and mall security, then arrested and charged with something-er-other, but dammit I'm gunna do it and you should too!

Actually, no.. His beard's fake though so I might be able to rip it off and say "This beard is not befitting a Christian image! Try and catch me little elf!!"

:::runs down escelator, chased by angry children and santa's elf:::

Before sitting on Santa's lap remember to place a strip of toilet paper on each of his legs..

You can't be too careful these days.

When I entered the United Methodist Seminary at Drew University (est. 1864), it was announced within the first week of classes that a certain 'image' was required for ordination. I was a recently-baptised [Catholic Church] Jew, with a close-cropped beard and reddish-blond hair down to my mid back at the time. The professor looked straight at me. 'Keep looking little man...I have no plans to be ordained a Methodist minister. I just left college 6 months ago with a degree in philosophy, I'm coming down from 2 1/2 years of acid-tripping twice a week, and I have no idea where I'm going, so I might as well read the Bible and meet some famous mystics in the meantime.' They didn't like me very much.
