i dont know how many of you are familair with maynard from tool/apc but i think all you fans out there might find this intresting........
"Blue"
HE IS TALKING ABOUT MUSHROOMS!!!
I didn't want to know
I just didn't want to know
Best to keep things in the shallow end
Cause I never quite learned how to swim

I just didn't want to know
Didn't want, didn't want,
Didn't want, didn't want

Close my eyes just to look at you
Taken by the seamless vision
I close my eyes,
Ignore the smoke,
Ignore the smoke

Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
Such a lovely color for you
Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
While I just sit and stare at you

Because I don't want to know
I didn't want to know
I just didn't want to know
I just didn't want

Mistook their nods for an approval
Just ignore the smoke and smile

Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
Such a lovely color for you
Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
Such a perfect color for your eyes
Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
Such a lovely color for you
Call it aftermath, she's turning blue
While I just sit and stare at you

I don't want to know

"Gravity"
(TALKING BOUT SOBRIETY)
Lost again
Broken and weary
Unable to find my way
Tail in hand
Dizzy and clearly unable to
Just let this go

I am surrendering to the gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live

I fell again
Like a baby unable to stand on my own
Tail in hand
Dizzy and clearly unable to just let this go
High and surrendering to the gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live, I choose to live, I choose to live

Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
Help me survive the bottom

Calm these hands before they
Snare another pill and
Drive another nail down another
Needy hole please release me

I am surrendering to the gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live, I choose to live

well what do you all think?
if you dont understand it then he wrote a song about you called "the outsider"

i want feedback..

In the dawn my toes are cold They spread their little trinkets on the ground In the hall By the closet door They creep into my bed without sound On a cube In a plastic egg A hundred fabric figures in a pile See them march Toward me And dance across the floor trippily Little faces keep no track of time Little faces speaking out in rhyme Little faces smiling in my mind Tiny doors For walking through sticky fingers clutch forbidden things the phone For talking through Sinking ships On a foamy sea That tumbles from the motion of filthy Little hands In the dark When eyes are wide listen to secrets that I tell In a ball On tiny beds Or beneath them where the shadow people dwell moon Beams split the night Leave bars of yellow pasted on their faces As they drift into a dream

I can't give you any interesting feedback. I saw the name and had to read it! Interesting though, thank you!

My old friend Sean refused to read a book I had on Christian Gnosticism once until I told him that Maynard Keenan was into Gnosticism. I was lying though, but he read the book!

Ya his lyrics can really be takin a number of ways.  Each way fits together great.  Whichever is best for you, take it that way.

That whole album is about the trials of heroin addiction. The key line in that song, wich you misquoted, is: "mistook "the nods" for an approval"...

Have to disagree with you there (now don't get upset or anything, you did ask for feedback).

The only possible mushroom reference in the first is to the blueing of mushrooms, and that's just reaching really far.

As for the second, I don't see why that can't be just about losing spirituality, gravity being the force (maybe even your ego) that drags you away from being in touch with yourself.

If that second one is about shrooms, Maynard is a drug addict.

Third Eye is possibly about peyote;

Shroud-ing all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar.
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song...

I have always thought "blue" was about letting someone sink into depression/addiction because you are tired of trying to help them because they do nothing to help themself. like the depression 'fits' said person.

'such a lovely color for you'

ninjapixie: I am rather sure that 'third eye' is about Bill Hicks.
[edit] bill hicks and TRIPPING, of course.

Possibly tripping on peyote? I think the 'desert buttons' gives it away.

Though i haven't heard any jokes about peyote or mescaline from him. Did he make any?

not that I am aware of, no. and I have heard a LOT of his shit, if I do say so myself.
maynard does live in AZ. maybe that might explain the desert reference?
It really does sound like peyote, now that I read it again.

13th step is the final step in the 12 step program created by AA for overcoming addiction. The 13th step is falling in love after you complete all the other steps.

THis album is definitely about the recovery process to heroin or any addiction for that matter...

Lying to get just what I need.

"she's got everything I need, pharmacy keys"

"Turning blue" (possibly an OD?)

One line does not mean it's ABOUT peyote. Look around and find out what the third-eye is, it shouldn't be hard.

I's not about Bill Hicks either. He talked about the Third Eye though.

'Holy crow', 'pull the pieces from the sand', 'desert buttons'. More then one line references to peyote. I think it's about using peyote to open his third eye.

note* the other reference to mushrooms is..."?i close my eyes just to look at you taken by the seamless vision"..
hence stop doing them and interconnect to yourself too feel the inspiration they offer.... it can be taken by what you perceive but, i've seen interveiws and he states the whole thing about self destruction and finding new intelligence... the phrase "i didnt want to know"

well who wants to know your method of comfort is self destructive and ultimately choosing something else over life.

life is the pain the happiness....

He's mentioned it in a chat room interview he did. There's a log of it somewhere on http://toolshed.down.net. Someone asks him if still does mushrooms and he responds something like peyote or mescaline. He's mentioned doing mushrooms a number of times as well.

Third Eye is pretty simple in the chorus "Prying open my third eye". He's mentioned it in interviews, that there is a gland called the pineal gland, and if you read more about it (which it's probably be mentioned a whole lot on this board) the pineal gland is the "third eye chakra" or other names. It's believed to contain DMT, and I think Maynard may mention this in an interview sometime.

That line about the desert buttons certainly sounds like peyote, which coresponds with the song, the idea of using psychedelics or meditation to "pry open you're third eye". I really wonder how much Maynard's done drugs, since it is a strong theme of a lot of the music, but he also tries to play it down, probably to avoid either sounding like a crazyed drug addict, or so it's not what people focus on (like with Cotton Mouth Kings, or other marijuana-based bands).

Oh yeah, and the standard disclaimer about interepting it your own way, yadda yadda yaddida...

I've read in an interview that he did mushrooms for awhile but he doesn't need them anymore and doesn't believing in slaving to anything for those experiences, he see's them as a tool that is need for a period of time. He even talked about a friend who used San Pedro and Peyote but he noticed the man slaved to it for those experience's. I will search for the article.
