ANd what I find really confusing is that I have several articles on poisonings by Panaeolus papilionaceus fromthe 11 centurty, 18th and 19th and 20th century and the line drawings look i like Copelandia cyanescens whose original name was Copelandia papilionaceas. Some mycologists int he 18th to 21st century all identified same shrooms with differenct names.
Remember Subbalterautus was also P. rufus, P. venonosus and several other names before.

I still think Panaeolus papilionaceus is closer to P. subbalteatus than P. sphinctrinus or p. campanulatus. That is because early descriptions of Panaeolus papilionaceus all refer tot he cap as becoming flatten with opr in aging.

The bell shaped campanulatus and P. sphinctrinus do not flatten out like P. subbalteautus but inthe original latin descriptions of P. papilionaceus they get flat.

mj

Still much confusion since both monographs on panaeolus genera are in either French (Ola'h) and in German(Gerhardt).

mj

Here is an average size Panaeolus sphinctrinus

But then i found the mother of all Panaeolus sphinctrinus

The guides also state height as 10 cm, this one was the length of my arm, more like 45cm.
