Sub-in for vermiculite
    #3049971 - 08/25/04 08:45 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I was practicing my growing skills with a bolete shroom.I didn't have any brown rice powder or vermiculite on hand so I figured I'd try something new.Instead of brown rice powder I used wheat germ and to replace vermiculite I used the sand you get when you buy an antfarm. And what do you know, 3 days after inoculation I started seeing mycelium.Just thought yall would like to know so you can try it and see if it works.

I have used very small pea gravel once as a sub for VERM.
It worked great. Only problem I had was after the first flush I had a very hard time keeping the cakes wet enough to make great second flushes

Goodluck

I have seen someone take one of their cakes when they first place it into the terrarium the dug out a little bit of the bottom of the cake and filled it with verm. Then after the first flush they would inoculate the verm with water.Maybe this could work with the pea gravel to help the cakes stay moist.

What I say on the posts is not true!!I never grew, ingested,or distributed mushrooms of any kind.In fact I don't even know what a mushroom is.
