Perlite humidification.......no condensation.Now with pics
    #3048729 - 08/25/04 03:26 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Well I birthed two cakes yesterday (dunked one) and placed into my styrafoam cooler fruiting chamber. The fruiting chamber had about two inches of perlite in it with about 3/4 inches of water at the bottom....hardly any condensation going on inside the chamber so I went out and bought a 52 quart sterelite (big plastic storage bin.

I cut out a rectangle in the top and covered with cling wrap and taped the wrap down.I have about an inch of perlite with a 1/2 inch of water in the bottom but still no condensation yet one cake is showing little hyphal knots (I think). Is it normal for no condensation inside the chamber?I'll take pics of my setup and post em in a little while.

2in perlite and 1in of water is what the tek called for.

Ok here are a few pics of my setup and a few of the cakes.Sorry I couldn't get a better pic of the cake(s) but I am working with a crappy digi cam rightnow (1 megapixel no optical zoom.

I plan on going out later today and getting a mist/spray bottle.

Get a pumpup type ($6) They are far superior to the squeeze type and can be adjusted to almost a heavy fog! Very Sweet!!! Nice fruiting chamber BTW  I like black bins as they make for very nice vertical growth.

Alright, humidity seems a little better in the new fruiting chamber and I think it's because the lid for this one has a snugger fit.I think I know my problem(s) now.For one,it seems that there is just a little too much water in the bottom and only a 1/4 inch of dry perlite on top so I am going to go out and get more tomorrow.

Second problem. My temp is around 79-80 degrees and I cant lower the AC anymore than that due to high bills :mad2:

Will my cakes still fruit at these tamps, how long should it take? What can I do to cool it down in there?

Thanx!

I think your doing the perlite wrong.

i toyed around with perlite for awhile when i first started, and what i always noticed was.....that shit floats. how the hell are you supposed to have it layered?

what i found was great was this, just take the perlite, and put it into a bucket of sort, and fill it with water, after all the perlite starts to float, just kinda start churning it, so its all getting nice and wet and soaking up water. filter that crap out in a strainer or something, and just put it into the bin. you shouldnt need anymore water after that, however. i took a cup, and just pour juuuuuuuuust a bit of water, so that it would have a bit to fall back on as the water evaporated. this should last a good 2 weeks, after that you may wanna either just clean the chamber out and start anew with new perlite, or just add some water. whatever you think will be fine should do. i kept my perlite in the chamber for about 3 weeks, until emptied it out entirely and bought some Hydroton :headbanger:

Water/iodine or h2o2 at half the depth of the perlite
