LOve Thy Neighbor As Thyself

Some people dont understand this saying... if you turn it around, "love thy self as thy neighbor" it seems to be a bit more logical to some.
do you think that it loses its meaning of compassion when reversed like that? or does the ends justify the means?

I do the same play with the golden rule, "do unto others as you would have them do on to you."
Sounds like a no brainer that will solve everything. What about the people who have others hurt them, steal from them, betray them, hate them, inangered with them etc?
Now take those people and tell them to do unto others as they have let others do to them. See the problem here?
The golden rule is meaningless in application until you love yourself.
Lets take your love your neighbor as thyself quote. What if you hate yourself? You can't apply it until you actually love yourself first.
A lot of people are highly self abusive so this quote is meaningless to them.
I think about this stuff too. LOL

I've wondered this too but never put it into words. A suicidal person should be heaven-bound according to Jesus if he runs around on a homicidal spree? This is why I think any so-called 'golden rule' or any one principle used as a universal truth is often a gimmick.

Something came to my mind: 'Look how you treat your neighbor, that shows much about how you are treating yourself.' I think, there is much much truth in it.

The illusion of this world is that we are all seperate.
An enlightened sage will often remind people this is not true, it is just Maya (illusion).
If you do not love your earthly family, what purpose do you serve here other than destructive?
If you have no love for those who are of the same spirit of you, can you really have love for yourself?

exactly.
A person who claims to have faith and love for God....but does not have faith and love for each human being, well that is an incorrect way of looking at things.
God can shine through each and every person, and when he shines through someone, its easy to love them. But its much more harder to love someone who god is Dormant in, hidden in. That is the challenge of "Love your neighbor as thyself"

All the things you begin to find out about happiness and of peace through experience or whatever you call discovering new things are Christianity. The more I learn without The Bible the more I see how it's all the things I'm trying to say. We all have the ability to realize what's good and bad(born with a soul), you're ego is developed here and is intended for this world and it conflicts or learns to shut out your soul/consciounce/whatever. Having the ability to know what makes happiness means nothing. Everybody would beleive in God if they didn't already have a definition of what it is.

Yes you are right, even if I meant 'yourself' personally, not as human-race. y->n = y->y = y->g g=g*d, n=neighbour, y=yourself, ->=treat (while ->=constant) [perhaps this is even changeable: n->y = y->g (= y->y);`Or g->y = y->n (= y->y) ? But that could not be placed as an 'order' ]

you guys are fucked@!
OK WHOEVER WROTE THIS IS A FUCKING IDIOT!
THE QUOTE: "do unto others as you would have them do on to you."
MEANS TO TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT THEM TO TREAT YOU. WHEN IT SAYS "as you would have them do on to you(supposed to be UNTO)" THIS MEANS - AS YOU WOULD WANT THAT PERSON TO DO UNTO (treat) you -
IF YOU WERE TO FOLLOW THIS RULE YOU WOULD BE A VERY GOOD PERSON BECAUSE YOU WOULD SEEK THE WELLBEING OF EVERYONE, SINCE A WELLBEING IS WHAT ONE WOULD DESIRE FOR THEMSELVES IN THE FIRSTPLACE.
DO YOU SEE?

Not everyone cares about their own well being. That is an assumption. If you don't give a damn about your own well being, how can you concieve of caring for anothers?
Many here understood that quite easily. My apologies if you couldn't comprehend that.
I know the common meaning of it that you reiteritated ....please even my 7 year old understands the "idea". The idea is only positive when you FIRST treat yourself well and many people don't!
I offered up a deeper consideration of it because its what we do on a philosophy message board, ya know contemplate deep thoughts, deeper meanings, understandings, different perspectives on things............................................
Cool Pictures by the way.

What was my typo bobby needs to forgive me for making?
I'm a she by the way. I know the wisdom in what I said and I know I'm not what bobby called me. I think it was funny, in a sad way, and is why I welcomed him to the shroomery with a loving heart.
In my book, he's all ready been for-given the free will to say what he wants to in life. The mods may have an issue with it being said at the shroomery, I don't.
Bobbies cool with me. i worte elsewhere here as well that anger is a cry for love.
I love you Bobby!

and sorry, i dont know why i referred to you as a him....i wasnt even thinking about gender at the time , just love as for the forgiveness. i want to speak on that. i think only we as humans need to forgive each other(especially OURSELVES), because god doesnt have to forgive because he never held anything against us in the first place, he loves us unconditonally, and one would only have to forgive someone if they didnt accept someone for even a moment. god always accepts us no matter what, so what is there for him to forgive, ya know? i guess saying god will forgive us is just a simple way to say that god will not hold anything against you, ever. sorry i got off topic, just wanted to say that also want to add, that once you start practicing unconditional love toward all living things(god), forgiveness will be automatic, thats how loving you actually are, if you want to be. like them christians they think that we fall short of the glory of god, but they are so lost, WE ARE THE GLORY OF GOD, we are just sleeping, some of us are waking up though you KNOW who u are. feel the love, and your spreading the love simultaneously sorry for the ramblin, i just like to share

Now i am really laughing. Bobby got all worked up because of that typo of "on to versus unto". Boy that is really stretching for an excuse to vent and name call.
At least he picked me and not someone who would've given him the war he was looking for.
Bobby dude, your gonna get a heart attack if you stress over that stuff. Life is tooooooooooo long to sweat the small stuff!

Whats even funnier is that he did it in a post entitled
"Love thy neighbor as thyself"
I think he proved my comment about the golden rule being meaningless until you can love yourself.
hey bobby, if it makes you feel any better,
I AM THE FUCKING IDIOT who wrote that!
