Predictable Opinions
    #3047620 - 08/25/04 08:10 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

It seems to me that you can easily predict whether most members (especially those in the US*) of this board will agree with an idea or a policy based on which side of the political spectrum it (supposedly) originates from. Obviously this is not a hard and fast rule but it seems to apply more often than not.

Does this mean many of us are guilty of a serious lack of thinking or is one side always right and the other side always wrong??!

*I only single out the US because the whole left/right thing seems alot more exaggerated there than it does in Europe.

Some think and others need help doing so. I'll let you guess who I feel needs to think for themselves.

In general, yes, people's opinions can be predicted based on their placement in the political spectrum, mainly because a lot of issues are related(for example, I oppose welfare and universal health care for essentially the same reason). However, I think there are a lot of people here who occasionally tend to be quite surprising in the positions they take. For example, I've noticed JesusChrist, a self-described conservative, speaking highly of Clinton on more than one occasion. There is always room for disagreement within a certain political ideology. I, for one, am a big fan of Evolving's debates with pinksharkmark over the Iraq War(and war in general). I personally tend to be more of an environmentalist than most libertarians.

I wish I could think of some good examples from the liberals on this board, but the only issues I recall seeing liberals here disagree on for the most part are gun control and whether to vote for Kerry or Nader(I'm not saying there aren't other issues--I just haven't noticed). I remember for a while we had a few pro-war liberals here, which made for an interesting mix.

I've also noticed that there are some here(but sadly not enough) who are willing to point out the flaws in one of their ideological brethren's arguments. This is one of the first signs I see of an independent thinker. That, and a willingness to at least reconsider their position when it doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.

I think that predictability is in the eye of the beholder with a lot of these cases.

Not too many people in this forum like to label themselves. Labels are usually assigned by others.

There is less disagreement in those debates then you might think. Neither of us object to war in principle. It's just that he takes the position that Iraq was not a threat to the citizens of the US, and I remain unconvinced that Iraq wasn't. There are reasonable arguments supporting both sides of that proposition.

So basically you can see a few areas where "righties" such as yourself, display the ability to embrace ideas which may be considered "leftie" by some, but you are unable (unwilling) to see any areas where "lefties" embrace ideas originally espoused by "righties"

This is how the greatest puppet show on earth perpetuates itself.

Threat or no threat, I don't care. You either adhere to the terms of your agreements or the law will come down on you. Be careful what you agree to. The penalties will be severe.

Way to twist my words there, buddy. I merely said that I couldn't recall off-hand any such instances. I know they've happened, probably about as much as the reverse happening. It's just that no such occasions stuck out in my mind. Believe it or not, I am not a liberal-hater. Most liberals I know are very well-intentioned, and many are rather open-minded and intelligent. I just think they are a bit misguided in the fact that they always seem to look to the government to solve every problem. In general, I appreciate and respect the liberal posters on this forum, and think many of them are rather intelligent and open-minded(with a few notable exceptions). I certainly do not think that either the right or left has a monopoly on ignorance.

I had a brilliant and scathing expose' written up on the effects of strict and loose ideologies on individual thought within a moderately confined group, but then you went and messed up the thread with your multiple question marks. Way to go.

examples though of liberals on the board considering ideas embraced by conservatives: affirmative action, gun laws, school vouchers...
