More finds in the Rocky Mountains - pics (updated 8/25/04)
    #3046277 - 08/24/04 09:22 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

More rain has brought more mushrooms to the usual spots. These guys all look great, especially the oysters and the pure white ones. The more of the same agaricus littered the place still, they are HUGE now.

First species we found growing on some downed twigs near lush soil.

species 1 - 1
species 1 - 2
species 1 - 3

Second species was found acouple feet away growing out of the ground.

species 2 - 1
species 2 - 2

Third kind was also found close by.

species 3 - 1
species 3 - 2

These next pictures have two different species in them, atleast i think. One of the mushrooms is pure white, bright white actually. The other kind look similar except for a orange-tan top with brown gills. They were found in a dark musky wet ground near downed trees, in fact one of the trees looked like it had mycellium or something growing on it. We turned it over for a pic, didnt come out well though.

species 4 - 1
species 4 - 2
species 4 - 3
species 4 - 4

The next kind of mushrooms were found growing in a dryer grassy area. The pictures say more words then I ever could...

species 5 - 1
species 5 - 2
species 5 - 3

Finally the last type of mushrooms that we were unsure of were very solitary. There is only acouple of them and my digi died after this picture :frown:

species 6 - 1

Of course I didnt forget the pictures of the oysters! These were found growing acouple hundreed feet from the last patch i found weeks ago. Growing on the same type of tree, these seem much healthier also.

Oysters 1
Oysters 2
Oysters 3

--- UPDATE

Went back out today to get good pictures of the white mushrooms that were too blury in the other ones. These mushrooms are so white that the the flash made most of the pictures un-usable.

Heres the only picture of the pure white mushroom with white gills that came out. It is growing out of decomposed wood, not sure on the species of tree... too decomposed.

White species - 1

Here is a picture of another mushroom that we found growing about a foot away from the other one. It looks like the cap is moldy almost but im no expert.

species 8  - 1
species 8 - 2

Species 1 appears to be an Agrocybe of some sort. A spore print would help resolve it.

Species 2 shows that to need to start smelling the wild mushrooms you find. These will probably smell like green corn. They are very similar to Inocybe sororia, which is common in late summer.

Species 3 isn't in very good shape, but it looks like a Tricholoma or Hygrophorus.

The specimens of species 4 that are in focus are Inocybes.

Species 5 are Inocybes also.

Species 6 is out of focus, but is also probably an Inocybe.

In case you didn't know, all Inocybes should be considered poisonous. Almost all of them tested contain high levels of muscarine, a very unpleasant but, fortunately, rarely lethal poison.

Your oyster mushrooms are Pleurotus pulmonarius, and those are in great condition.

Happy mushrooming!

The area is buggy as shit, it's hard to hold the camera down near the mushroom while getting bit to hell. Plus it's not that great of a digi so the auto-focus doesn't work too well, the pic either comes out great or crappy. With low batteries and a small flash card i had to make do... sorry bout the pics.

That third one was great. I always find myself looking for a good background to use. You used the beautiful blue sky; it made your camera know exactly where to focus, and provided a color verifier. I may be able to use that someday. Thank you.

As many might have guessed, species 8 is... wait for it... yet another Inocybe. There are sure a lot of them out there, aren't there?

Happy mushrooming!
