Crack Pot or Cracked Pot
    #3045088 - 08/24/04 04:34 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

A water bearer in China had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole
which he carried across his neck. One pot had a crack in it, while the other pot
was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long
walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a
full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a
half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of
its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was
ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish
only half of what it had been made to do. After 2 years of what it perceived to
be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream... "I am
ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all
the way back to your house." The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that
there were flowers only on your side of the
path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about
your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day while
we walk back, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these
beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are,
there would not be this beauty to grace the house.

But how does it apply to my everyday life?

Good question.

It taught me, to think twice before judging peoples flaws as being a bad thing. It taught me to look for what grows from out of them that is of beauty. It taught me, to become more accepting of my flaws and to appreciate them.

The way to apply this one is by getting it's message of acceptance and appreciation for the "flaws" of life. When you move past judging them as being less then and inferior, you can see the more then and superior they leave in their wake.

When YOU apply it to your everyday life, you will experience more joy as being in accepting and appreciative states feels really good.

Sometimes, in life when we see flaws like the crack in the pot, we think the pot is useless and no good to us and throw it out and we miss out on the opportunity to see what it could of offered us.

Anyone else want to answer this?

HOw is a flaw, like being an asshole, a good thing? How can I look at a child molester and find something good in that and not feel a need to judge him?

Good question

The asshole one is easy. When assholes deal with enough assholes and become horrified by the reflection, they start to make changes because they don't want to be like that asshole.

In the case of the child molester, you can judge what he did, but we are not our actions at the deepest level. I am stretching here, but consider people who have dealt with it personally and moved out of bitterness and hate and have gained strength of character, forgiveness, compassion for the "il" and acceptance in general as a result, where they may not have had that before having been faced with the horror. It created an opportunity fior growth and we can see the benefits from the big picture, not from looking through the eye of judgment at the flaw.

rape isn't a good thing at all.but as part of consequences, theres benifits also.Lets say a girl got raped somewhere close to home.It could inspire her to awaken what she didn't know.
Its like this:
You took my innocecence, and you dug a hole in me.From that hole, the flowers of life bloomed, and it gave me more wisdom thanyou could ever know,ASSHOLE!!!!

not to be an asshole, but its just the topic, and this might be an awful thing to discuss.but the rapist also benifited from the girls flaws as well.by benifit,i mean to his own needs. To me,there is no benifit to the act  on the rapists part. :nonono:

I guess the same could apply to the child molester

here's another way to apply it to everyday life. Using the analogy of the story, you are given a vehicle to look at your own flaws you may beleive are handicaps to you and see how you can turn them into productive and useful aspects and or take a look from another point of view and consider what they have left in your wake that has effected others in a enriching way.

The real question is: Why didn't the water-bearer take the time to repair or replace the pot? Any decent crafstman takes care of his tools?

If you take note of his reply in the "I have a quick question" post he didn't see that because he is into destroying flowers with weed wackers. He can't see or appreciate the beauty in them.

Also, less water in the pot is a lighter load.

yeah, he'd have been better off fixing the pot and growing flowers at his place with the extra water.
unless he really liked that hike to the water and back.

great story, as it goes to show that even a flaw can have a strength. it hsould allow us to see how making assumptions and putting a label doesn't hold merit. all alvels bring to the table is mental anguish. it's akin to focusing on just one partical aspect of things, instead of all particular aspects.

in every negtive there is a positive lurking.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

He can't see or appreciate the beauty in them.

Here we go again with the "Spiritual" ad hominem. Not only is this bad form but, is (as usual) totally incorrect.

People think my nature photos are extraordinarily beautiful.

if i was on my way to go get some water,a path of flowers would be awsome. The pot never had a flaw.He saw a situation and adapted, thats all.I wish i had somewhere to get water, that sounds awsome to do.Get up and get some vital nessicity, you get exerciise, you get an expereince everyday, you get life.
No one here probably would of seen the cracked pot as a problem at all if he planted marijuana.
