no timothy is hay- not what you want to use look at craft stores or just ask at some farms if you live near some or check www.mycosupply.com they sell mini-bales of straw for cheap and they are a shroomery sponsor

Well I do have a comment to make about the whole hay, straw thing. Timothy is not hay, it is a grass component that makes up a bale of hay. Along with other grasses, like clover, alfalfa, etc. There are usually three cuttings during the hay season. This means the farmer cuts the field three times. Third cutting hay is usually the nicest, and richest of the cuttings. Any hay that is left out in the sun to bake dry will become straw. The sun will bleach it out and the grasses will dry out to straw. Straw is just old dried out hay. I do know this because as a child and young adult I showed horses and had to go out in the hot summer to bale that shit. Sucky work for a 10 yr. old. But I loved my horses so did it as part of a responsibility. And had I known then all the mushies growing in our pasture could make me have a good time I would of never sold my horse! Anyway, the straw is always better to use because it will hold moisture much better than hay, also hay is more prone to mold because it has yet to turn to straw. I guess depending on where you live, but in the USA at this time of year there should be plenty of straw at many garden shops, even small ones. And with Halloween coming up there should be plenty of straw to get. Just my 2 cents.

Well to dry hay out to straw can take quite some time if left in the bale. I guess if you took the bale apart and seperated the flakes and left to dry it would work. Turning hay to straw can take a while unless you did spread it out to dry etc. In my experience it can take a whole year or two sometimes to turn the hay to straw, it just depends on climate, humidity, etc. If you live in a warm climate, or say out West where humidity is non-existent, then left out in the sun it should turn quicker. Some bales left in our barn turned after sitting for about 5 yrs. into some great straw. But we just burned em on the bonfire for fun one night. I will try to experiment with this a little to see if there are ways to process the hay to straw and the ammount of time it may take. If you are really anxious to cultivate, then you should just order some or try some stores. Good luck with it, and I'll get a bale of hay and try different methods for turning it to straw. First cutting hay is usually the closest to straw, and that is cut in late May beginning of June(at least in Mich.) and that would probably turn to straw if left out to bake in the sun during the rest of summer. I've never really paid attention because I have no problem finding straw. I will do a little research though and see what results.

There have been plenty of analyses of Timothy hay/grass and Wheat straw and there is a big difference in composition/nutrition as well as growth results. When it's cut makes a big difference I agree. Cereal straws are best and wheat straw has the best structure for our needs. Timothy is a grass, Agreed. Timothy grass cannot be turned to straw (FACT!)

Any grass plant material works fine. I have used grass clipping from my yard several times. I think what you have will work good. Think of it this way ..... If a cow will eat it. Then shrooms will grow on it.

I have to say that I have seen timothy grass turn to straw, with my own I eyes in my own barn. It takes some time for it to turn. What does it matter anyway. There are a million and one things to use for substrates, casings, and outdoor gardens. Yes wheat straw is the best straw to use for shroom cultivation, but not everyone has access to that. I was just offering suggestions that may help out that is all. To turn hay to straw it has to mold and get old and dry out. Any bale of hay will eventually turn to straw imho. I agree with Fucknuckle in that any organic grass type material will work as long as it composts in some way and offers some kind of nutrient or growth medium for the fungus. Good luck with your grow.

Straw: The dried remains of fine-stemmed plants(wheat, rye, barley...) from which the seed has been removed in threshing. Straw has a golden color.
Hay: Grass that has been cut, left to dry in the field and then baled. It is fed to livestock through the winter when fresh grass is not available. The color of hay is greenish-grey.

$8.95 for a small 6" X 6" X 12" bale of straw is NOT CHEAP. Seriously, I can get a huge bale of wheatstraw for under a dollar. If you have any farmers or amish living near you, I'd suggest going there. I always go to the amish for my straw and cracked corn. If I can I'll put a pic of a bale on here so you can see the size difference. But seriously, I wouldn't buy it online. Not only will you get overcharged, but you've gotta pay for shipping as well.

I found a place that is somewhat cheap, whether they have it in the winter or not that is another question.....oh well, guess I've got to get it while the gettin' is good I was actually quite sure of the difference, but when I started calling around, the people at the nurseries confused me. I had read posts, but wanted to be safe rather than wasting my time. Hopefully I get some cut by a special thresher, or combine as they call it in america....

thank you very much for that post, the city boys on here do like to call straw hay, and it sorta annoys me.
