Cake that smells bleachy
    #3045848 - 08/24/04 09:07 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

One of my husbands BRF cakes that is fully colonized, but still in the jar, has a bleachy smell to it. We plan on throwing it out, but we were still curious to know what it might be. You can still smell the mycelium underneath of the bleach smell. We never used any bleach on any of the jars or mixing utensils or anything. If anyone has any clue why it would be giving off that smell, I'd appreciate it.

is it a sweet smell or noxious like bleach? i assume you know the smell of mycelium? any odor unlike that of myc is not good, and dont throw it away if you think its bad...give it a chance in the garden!

peace

It almost burns my nose like bleach. Yeah, I know what myc smells like  :smirk: You can still sort of smell the myc under the bleach smell. Today it's even taking on a beige color. I'm not even sure I want to try and put it outside. I'm afraid it might mess with what's already out there.

Did you soak the jars in bleach prior to filling them with substrate and pressure cooking them?

Or for that matter, have you ever soaked them in bleach, the bleach can basically stay there forever. I had to throw out all my jars once because I let them soak in bleach for days and they pretty much killed off any growth consistently, no matter how much washing I did.

I don't even have bleach in the house. They've never been near it.

Sounds very suspicious then, I personally wouldn't risk it when smell is strong.
