Incubator humidity?

I set up a new incubation chamber, it is as follows: 1 - 18gallon rubbermaid tub 1 - 10gallon rubbermaid tub (inside the 18gallon and strapped to the bottom of the 18gallon to prevent it from floating)
1 - 10 gallon aqarium heater (which is submersible to a certain point - thus it hangs vertically from the rim of the 10 gallon into the 18 gallon.
This setup cost less than $20.
Question: Will there be a humidity factor effecting the jars (as there is more water being heated) - which the tops are (the jars) protected with coffee filters/rubberbands (?)

dude - I have the same heater as you, and I'm facing the exact same issue right now, in fact, I just altered my setup today because the humidy in the chamber was out of control. I'm not entirely sure how much of a problem this is to the jars, but it's a huge wet mess. The difference is that I had my heater submersed in a jar with no lid instead.
What I've done now is semi-submerse the heater into a glass jar with a metal lid. The glass cylinder of the heater goes through the metal lid, and I siliconed the edged to make a good seal - I popped a tiny hole in the lid to let pressure escape - it actually makes the water boil!
I have the temperature up to 81 right now and there's FAR less condensation, so I may be on the right track....

Check out this tub-in-tub method:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1
If my method proves crappy, then I will eventually move to this setup, but if you're like me then you want to use what materials you have and save some money.

Humidity is NOT a factor in incubation!
your jars have the necessary water!(we hope)

according to this:
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23281
RH should be at 70%, which tells me that it is a factor (why though, I don't know). I also read that when heating an incubation chamber there is risk of drying out your cakes prematurely...

well when i was probably your age...a dirty ass book shelf up towards the top of the room was considered a great place for jars...this whole incubator thing is a way of cutting down on time...IMHO room temp is just fine...unless you are in a hurry...and in that case this is the wrong hobby! (by the way, my stuff is fine at 79...up in the loft)

you should have use 2 18 gallon rubbermaids( i got exactly what you got, its called the rougheneck), see the holes in the handle, use them to tie them together to stop flotage, anyways your incubator needs to be as dry as possible, not to be a dick i would not put my jars into your set up.

humidity around 70%rH, proper substrate creation and inoculation
You just need to heat the incubator. The jars have there own self contained moisturized environment.

Exactly. I thought of the 'heater in a jar' too.(!) Silicone seems like a great idea. So, Cornelius - if I have you correctly - your jar with the heater doesn't even need to be submersed in water. Also, the humidity factor - i am to understand, isn't good at such a high percentage - maybe because of the friendly environment for contams. Anyways - thanks for the kickback. trying -Qwon

use the tub in tub, just use the same size tubs and you will be perfect, i put tub in tub over the heater in jar method because you get a more even temp throughout your incubator with the tub in tub.
both will work, use what fits your needs best.

Ive used that meathod. I used a heater in a 1L water bottle, the rubber seal ot the top seald the mouth so no humidity came out, this was in a cardboard box with a small pc fan blowing around. The temp fluctuated allot. Then i went out and spent $8 on 2 same sized totes and went tub in a tub using zip ties on the handles to hold the top on in the water. I used a heavy duty screen rack to raise the jars off the bottom and computer fan. This was accurate to within .5*F.

grOwer - you wrote that the jars have their own self contained moisture level (or to the effect) - does this mean that the moisture won't affect the jars per say, but the environment may be more welcoming to contams? q

actually, it's not recomended that you use the heater without any water - it might me a fire hazard. The instructions on mine say "do not use out of water.

also - the problem still existS for qwon and I that we have SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE heaters which have to have their top portions (with the temp control knob) exposed somehow...

chill
RH is a factor in that it makes a mess in the chamber, and potentially produces a contam friendly environment....

Heh. I jsut made my incubator last week. I didn't purchase a fully submersable heater, and bought two 19 Litre "Sterilite" containers, so I couldn't hang my heater on the side. Instead, I cut a small hole near the bottom of a smaller side of the "water holding" container. I stuck my heater into the hole and silicone glued the fuck out of it. No leaks as of now, and the incubator works great. i have had my jars in there for three days and the are already about 2 square inches of myc growth in each jar (this is good for my as I have not experienced such a quick growth).
As well, my incubator humidity is exactly 70%, as there is no water in the top container. The temperature is at 32 degrees celcius.

Don't kid yourself it can certainly be a factor depending on filter disk setup!

i have a semi submersible fishtank heater aswell, what i do is get a large metal milkshake cup and stick the heater in it so the top stays out of the water, it keeps the incubator at a pretty level temp and no need for the humidification becuase as the water gets hot it evaporates so it's little effort, all i have to do is fan it

you don't have a cover on your chamber?...where would the humidity evaporate too?

Fanning is not desirable during incubation.
