I just posted twice desparately seeking ids, so go there first, please, before reading these alcohol induced ramblings.

The gymnopilus genus. Gary Menser's field guide recently came in hand and he states that the western US species of spectabilis along with the European species are either "latent" (which means what?) or inactive. East coast and Japanese gyms are psychoactive. He concludes that the "active principle" remains unknown. What's up with that? After a couple of months I still can't spell psilocybin or psilocyn (really, I just checked). And now the truth comes out that whatever makes gyms active is different. By the way, bitter or not, I am getting interested in gyms.

The Gyms I find in Ohio and West Virginia certainly do contain psilocin, which is evident from the blueing reaction, and probably psilocybin as well. There are other active compounds in them similar to the ones in kava kava; these account for the bitter flavor. Look here; note MJ's post about the active principles in spectabilis.
