ID please? unsure of Seattle find 8/21
    #3037653 - 08/22/04 08:34 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all, I hate to bug you guys but I'm stumped on this one.  Was walking around near an Agaricus augustus patch  (thanks to all the rain we've been getting!!) and stumbled upon these huge guys:

Originally, I thought they were a Stropharia species because of the purple/pink gills... but after a spore print--which was brown to dark brown when heavily sporulated--and closer examination (volva and veil present, sweet smell present when stem cut in half) I am now thinking they are some type of Agaricus.

I've tried IDing them via Mushrooms Demystified, but every time I come to a possible answer the pictures just don't seem to fit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!
:sun:

I think your right about Agaricaus. I once found some horse mushrooms that big.

yeah i was possibly thinking the Giant Horse Mushroom, but the pics in MD didn't look quite right... and it's nowhere NEAR a pasture!

I found my horse mushrooms growing under an evergreen tree on a college campus.

hmmm... sounds oddly familiar!

whats the main difference between the horse mushroom (Agaricus arvensis) and the giant horse mushroom (Agaricus osecanus group) other than possibly the season?

Or is it possibly A. fissuratus which is common in the Puget Sound area of Washington? (where I am)

hrmmm, I'm not sure about those either, agaricus is a tough one. the only other species I've ID'd around here besides augustus are A. praeclaresquamosus and A. campestris but it doesn't really look like either of those. no yellow staining or anything?

these I found a while back are a bit older but they look kind of similar, I never found out what species they are, just that they're some kind of agaricus.

are there scales or anything on top of the caps or are they smooth?

DH

no real yellow staining and no almond smell. just a sweet smell when we cut the stem in half.

completely smooth cap, no scales of any kind.

reading through MD i sort of came to the same conclusion: seems like theres alot of uncertainty and grey areas in the Agaricus groups.

yeah, it's a pretty huge genus.

A. fissuratus seems like a reasonable guess, but I don't really know either way. Maybe Toxicman can help narrow it down more if he sees.

To see the bruising color, you need to actually bruise the tissue. After cutting one in half, scrape the inside hard enough to bruise the tissue with your knife edge, then wait a few minutes to see the color changes, which can take up to an hour.

A sweet smell would fit in with an almondy smell.

I would put those close to Agaricus arvensis. When they say a horse pasture they aren't necessarily meaning one that has a horse in it or that has horse dung. The main thing is an open area of grass - not among trees.

Happy mushrooming!

There is some yellowing on some parts of them but not from any of the intentional bruising of the split stem, more like thumb prints from picking .  They did have a sweet smell but it didn't have the same pungent, almondy smell as the A. Augustus that were picked at the same time.  And finally, they were all growing in grass but all within 5 feet of a forest floor.
not a true forest but many pines growing in an area which isn't maintained and is just natural.

Looks like Agaricus indeed. I'd vouch either for A. sylvicola or A. arvensis. And some big ones I must say
