Perlite sterilization.......Bake or boil?
    #3041343 - 08/23/04 10:44 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Ok I am going to birth some cakes in the next 24 hours and I am going to be using Perlite for humidity. My bag has been opened a few times (various houseplants needed some)and I want to sterilize before placing it in my fruiting chamber.I have read you can bake or boil. What's better. If I bake what temp should I bake at,350 F?

This is just my opinion but unless you got some dirt in there don't worry about it. Heating it up discolors it and makes it hard to tell if it contams. Or you could always just fork over the measely $3.50 for a new bag that you'll ONLY use for this purpose. I got bags with a zip lock on top, so it is always fresh and clean.

Sorry, I left out that I also fill with a H2O2/H2O mix like the KID. Never had a problem with the perlite either.

I like mines deep fried, with garlic and a bit of cayun pepper. If your cakes are fully colonized, and better yet have a few pinners, you wont have a lot to cry about. After all some of that dirty air is gonna get on them cakes too!

I've always used a bleach soak 1/4 cup to a five gallon bucket mixed with water, I'll soak it for days the clorine turns to a gas and evaporates after a while anyway but reguardless I still thoughly rinse it in a pillowcase and hang it to dry. It works great for the lazy man  I've found it to be very simple an easy over the years. Plus it whitens it up quite nicely! Bleach soak, Not just for newbies anymore!

It's easiest and most reliable just to PC it.

Cool I almost do the same thing but after soaking it over 2-3 days I lay it out in the sun to dry. That way I know all the bleach is gone. Cool

IMO why introduce an un wanted chemical into an un wanted substance? if you really want it "sterile" then PC it...it the fastest, most simple way. but then what the f**k do I know about perlite? well its good in my ladies soil!

peace

IMHO firing up the PC and all the BS involved is definitely not easier than filling a bucket halfway pouring in a 1/4 cup bleach stir and pour in the used perlite then forget about it. I can do a five gallon bucket at a time, I then pour it into a pillowcase let it drain rinse and pour it into the chamber slight to no smell except for the clean smell or I dry it if I'm not going to use it right away. No electricity or watching a PC. There is more chlorine probably in your tapwater than in the finished product. Bake, boil,PC? None of the above for perlite IME.
