amazing looking shrooms...?
    #3040684 - 08/23/04 08:29 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

found this nice looking patch in a local park nearby, just wondering what they where:

A. columbus, ohio, (mid-ohio)
B. gills are golden and attached
C. stem is about 7 inches long and 1 1/2 to 2 inches thivk, while cap is about 4 inches long
D. Stem is a shallow yellow near the bottom and slowly turns into a more golden color as it reaches the cap, it feels solid and has a tough spongie feel to it
E. Cap is golden brown and is curvy around the edges while gills are still attached
F. Have not done a spore print yet, (working on it)
G. The mushroom seems to bruise a dark blackish color but it is hard to tell becuase the shroom seems has such a tough feel to it all over
H. Smells sweet and kind of good

here are some pictures of the shrooms i felt bad picking them becuase they looked so nice, but a friend of mine advised me to pick them and post this.

Vade is on the phone with me and he would like me to add that when he picked them, he tried to pick one, and the whole patch came out together.

nice pictures, I side with DH...
definatly not g. spectabilis... The
decurrent gills rule that one out....

Interesting mushrooms.. I've never seen
Omphalotus olearius quite like those before... Nofindum....

I think Omphalotus olearius is a safe bet. Should drop a white print.

i would say definately jack o lanterns

they look slightly different from the ones ive found but

were they growing directly under a tree?

you should take that specimen inside and see if it glows in the dark.

The glowing is supposed to be very faint. You probably need to let you eyes adjust to the darkness for 5-10min and you might not want to look directly at them(look at something next to them).

Those don't look like any Jack-o-Lanterns that i've ever seen, and I've found them in Columbus; those stems look fatter and paler, and the gills don't extend as far down the stem as the ones that i have found.

Mushrooms Demystified only mentions two species of Omphalotus: O. olearius, and O. olivascens. Both are called Jack-o-lanterns. The former is native to the east coast, and the later is native to the west coast. My guess is that you have the west coast variety of Jacko'Lantern, Omphalotus olivascens. This is just a guess because I have never seen O. olivascens, but its not impossible that spores came to Columbus OH from California in a clump of mud in the fender of someone's car or the tread of his boots. If this is the case, then they are still Jack-O-Lanterns.

It troubles me that they are growing in the middle of a grassy lawn. I can understand now why somebody might think that they were chanterelles. I bet if you dig down below where they were growing that you would find a dead tree root.
