Vernon Howard's Secrets of Life
    #3040137 - 08/23/04 05:38 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have posted this three times with little interest and yet this guy (deceased) seems to have the best handle on spirituality that I have ever read. I am not pushing anything, but if you are interested you can get daily thoughts for free. (To subscribe, send a blank message to SecretsofLife-on@mail-list.com).

Perhaps no interest because the advice is generally quite practical and contains nothing about Retilians and Atlantis.

Today's Message:

"It is easy to tell the difference between an ego-building belief
and a self-liberating fact. A belief requires nervous protection
by the believer, while a fact stands alone and unconcerned. There
is no need to protect a page of print free of errors."

Good one. You can tell when a belief is held onto by the ego because a person will immediately jump to defend it. If something doesn't need defense it can stand on its own up to scrutiny. That is something I learned on these forums.

I can't speak for his other material, but I recently ordered his book "Mystic Path to Cosmic Power" and it was one of the few books I've ever started but never finished. It was just plain awful. I had read that over a million people had read this book, but I'm at a loss to explain why. The whole tone of the book was basically, "You idiot, you already have everything you need right now. Don't worry be happy." Gee pal, that's just swell. I don't need a book to tell me that.

If you want a book full of sugary platitudes (diabetics need not apply), if you are the kind of person who responds to such shallowness by all means read this book. It is mass market garbage posing as spirituality.

Other than that I think Vernon Howard is a wonderful author.

I only have his "100 Ways to Escape a Life of Hell" (or something close to that). It is concise and to the point, but hey - sorry I brought it up.

We return now to our regularly scheduled 2012 discussions which really help people get a grip on their life and problems...

Don't apologize- I was just expressing my opinion on one of his works. I guess I was expecting something a little more advanced. To me he seems to be cashing in the New Age movement by reducing everything down to simple platitudes. But if it works for you, that's all that matters.

Yeah... everyone knows that simplicity and spirituality are mutually exclusive. Duh.

The desire for complexity is one of those subtle ego tricks.

Jesus sums up Biblical scripture, "Love thine neighbor as thyself." Way too easy because it doessn't allow room for war, racism or any other form of bigotry or hatred. Instead people love to listen to preachers, go to Bible studies and quote verses and make it much more convoluted. This, the ego loves, because study postpones real action or change.

So have you read the book I'm referring to, Swami?

Yes, but I never achieved Cosmic Power (though I WAS able to crash my computer.) Was it the student or the teacher who failed?

Neither. I was already familiar with 99% of the material which IMO had been written far better by other authors. But again, if people get something out of it that helps them, more power to em!

Vernon Howard must have written this book before the fiery Waco tragedy eh?

Personally - I read his quotes and didn't find much new material, or anything I hadn't analyzed in the past, but I found his writing style was pretty good. It's simplistic and very easy to understand, which I'm sure was his intention.

"A belief requires nervous protection by the believer, while a fact stands alone and unconcerned. "

Had to bump this as some here seem to have missed this or not taken it to heart. This is evidenced by unbridled emotionalism and an inability to discuss ideas; instead focusing on individuals. Fear and not spirituality, is the motivation behind this form of lashing out.

Actually it's more of a ripple effect from the internal desire and the external action. Wanting to affect outside realities ti become more like your own, that type of thing. You do it to, except with rational ideas instead of Alf?.

Complexity exists, much in the way that simplicity excits. It stands alone, in and of itself. Take a building of "simplicity" or a building of minimal excess, while this building may be complex, its function is "simple". Maybe you could say the same for spiritual idea.

Take for instance the problem with christianity... countless denonminations, and yet everyone of them thinks that they are the one true way to and through god.

While some churches recognize the value of the others, they ignore the simple factors of what the main message of christ is.

Isnt judgement an ego trick too? Or is it just there, like the rest of things?

Well so many people have purchased Vern's books and no less than The Swami Himself recommended him so I decided to revisit the book. I was wrong. He knows of what he speaks. I guess I was in the wrong frame of mind when I sat down to read it initially.

I was already familiar with most of the ideas he presented, but its good counterprogamming to hear these type of things over and over. I would recommend the book to anyone.
