    #3038626 - 08/23/04 06:04 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

hello guys. when the fruiting chamber is a rubermaid with an air pump-tube-glass of water/h2o2 do you think that perlite would be useless?

thx

Have you thought of running air diffusers under a layer of hydroton/geolite/hydroleca?

if u use perlite and air pump connected with a glass of water/h2o2. Would it be wise to make 2 holes in the terrarium and fill them with pollyfil? and if yes, where should the holes be? higher than the perlite's top layer? or below?
thanks

yea if your gonna have an air pump putting the new air into your terrarium.

i know a guy who has two 1/2 inch air holes near the top of his terrarium. some people say at the top, other say near the perlite layer.

definitely it's NOT ont he top because Co2 is heavier than the oxygen

CO2 is molecularly heavier than O2 is per molecule.
Ergo: it will settle at the bottom.

While CO2 would normally settle to the bottom, even the airflow from a small dual-head air pump ($15 wal-mart cheapo) is enough to stir up the air and push out everything.

However, this is not enough airflow for a really good environment, as these pumps produce only a couple of CFM.

To get good CFM, take an impeller type humidifier, tape off about 80% of the input, fill with H2O + H2O2, and let her rip. Cutting off 80% of flow makes the output about 95% RH and keeps the unit from spraying water down tubes, etc.

Speaking of tubes, use corrugated pool hose ($15 for 25 ft. at wal-mart). This allows any fine water particles to condense and drip back into your humidifier.

This will run about 2-3 days before it needs a refill, and costs $35 to build. You don't need hydroton, lava rock, perlite, or anything of the sort. Use some sort of mesh (bakers cooling racks) to hold your cakes off the floor, as condensation (due to too short a hose) can occur, and you don't want your cakes wet at all.
