Jumpin on a train?
    #3037452 - 08/22/04 07:38 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

How ideal is it for someone to hop on a train and ride it somewhere?

just like they did during the great depression. I think itd be cool to ride a train, not knowing where it would go.

And no I'm not talking about a greyhound or something

I think he means without paying for it. Like, sneaking on, or riding the rails.

Well...  you go to the trainyard... and hide in the cars when the train is about to leave...
if you're really brave you get your friend to drive you alongside the train at the same speed and you jump out onto the train...  Or jump onto it from a helicopter... that'd be fun...  But yeah... people don't jump on moving trains

gotta do it when it's stopped...

I think it'd be fun as hell too... no trainyards nearby tho...

Don't get caught. If you do you will most likely be prosecuted for trespassing. Railroads are pretty serious about that, too. The glory days of being a hobo and hopping a train across the country are gone. Especially when you consider that a large amount of dangerous goods are shipped on trains. They take security serious.

Pretty dangerous, although I can understand the romance of ridin' the rails ala 1930's style. But I'm pretty sure it was a lot rougher than most imagine.

I've always wanted to do this.....couldn't you jump off if you saw the trainyard up ahead, granted you weren't going to fast?

I was actually thinking of it heavily yesterday...i was stopped at a rail road crossing while the train passed and I noticed a bunch of open boxcars and such....I really would like to do it someday, though I know I probably won't.

Are you talking about freight trains? People hop them while they're moving all the time around here, just for fun. You just get them when they're going past a road/ bridge and start to slow down, then you hop on a ladder, and then jump off whenever. No need to have it stop to let you on

Just don't get caught though. I've always wanted to ride a train across America, from here to Cali or Florida, but that'd take quite a while

Learn how to identify wild edible plants, and then hop off the train before approaching stopping places where you'd get arrested if you were caught. Spend the day foraging for edible plants, and you only have to carry minimal food around.

And clothes are overrated, you only need two or three sets, could easily fit in a backpack. Just travel as light as possible, no unneeded material posessions and you could do it methinks.
