A. var Formosa
    #3037295 - 08/22/04 07:03 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Today walking through the woods I found an A. var. Formosa. Il have pics and everything later. Iv done a search and couldnt come up with anything, as well as reading through my guide book. My main question is whats the difference between the var. Formosa and the red capped version?

Basically, the color of the cap.

With formosa, you need to be extra careful, as there are a lot of lookalike mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanx. Like I said Il have pics and everything later for an exact I.D. but as far as I can tell from what I know, my guide book and information on here, thats what I have. Growing around many pine trees in pine needles. Unfortunatly it has a few insect holes through it so I wont be consuming it even after the positive i.d.

I know dude. There is no way I would ever consider consuming this after some insect has chewed through it many times. I just wanted to get a positive i.d. that it was formosa. This makes my hopes go up. Not many things actually grow in my area but now that Iv found this, Il have something to look for.

not insects, slugs... usually snails and slugs are what eat it. i had pet rats that used to eat dried caps, so i know for sure rodents like to eat them. they'll be around my area pretty soon... woohee!! you'd have to be a real idiot to confuse them with anything else.
