too much water in jars?...
    #3037217 - 08/22/04 08:36 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Here's the situation....

I bought a PC off ebay a while ago and found out that it's so old that the seals are no longer available...I simply can't afford a new one, so I figured I would PC my jars without a seal. Because there is no seal, I put more water in the PC (halfway up the first row of jars) and PC'd for a solid hour. I have a feeling that there was a lot of bubbling in the PC and that excess water might have got into my jars. I went ahead and innoculated anyway, and they are colonizing but a hell of a lot slower than they should IMO...

The question: Could excess water cause slow colonization, or any other problems that I should know of?

yes did you not put tape on the holes ? or foil around them ? take the tape off the holes and let them dry out a little bit

water should not be able to get in the jars during PC'ing. You need to change your paking methods. Probably a piece of foil wrapped around your lids will suffice.

You should be able to tell if there is too much water in there. It should not pool up in the bottom at all, there shouldnt even be water droplets on the glass. The kernals should look damp, but not wet. If you shake the kernals they shouldnt 'clank', it should be a soft sound.

i find that PC the kernals for a half hour before loading into the jars for sterilization adds very good water content. Make sure you put in twice as much water as kernals, they swell hella

If theres no seal then you didnt get up to 15 PSI and you just boiled your jars for an hour. Good luck..

I put foil on my lids, and there's no pooling of water in the jars, but I figured there may be a bit more than normal...

If there's myco forming, sit tight, it will turn out all right...if it looks too moist or water is forming, try replacing the metal top of the jar with a paper towel for a day. DON'T DO THIS IF YOU DON'T USE A DRY LAYER OF VERMICULITE! Contamination would surely result.

I would spray/soak my paper towel with 3% H2O2 before putting it on the jar...this insures that nothing can germinate on it, and will last the day or two it takes to dry the cake. Only do this once...continually spraying your top layer will just keep it from evaporating the water in the jar, which is pretty useless.

I had a similar problem with some of mine, I loosened the lids and flipped them after putting down paper towels to absorb any of the extra moisture that dripped out the holes. A week later, they are showing more growth and less water, one gushed alot of extra water out! Some are still too mucky though, but getting better. This basically destroys your dry verm layer if you use one, but to have a chance to save a otherwise screwed jar it works just fine.
