I just clean them with washing up liquid. If your PCing them they're gonna get sterilized anyway, right?

oops, sounds like you don't have a pc.
Clean them very well in that case, prefably with anti-bacterial soap or bleach etc.

i clean 1 of 2 ways, depending on how the jars look... if its smellin like a mushroom cake, stick that sucker in the dish washer, but if its got a little rot, or yellow, or anything like that, i dont take any risks, dump a little bit of 90% ISOPROPYL ALCOHAL in it, shake it up real good, wipe off lid + lid ring with the alcohal, and dump out alcohal from the jar, and let it dry (dishwashing usually helps too before the alcohal sterlization to be extra safe )

Just a little warning about cleaning out contaminated jars:
Growth of any other shape or color than the white mushroom mycelium, except maybe from a little blueish tone, can be considered a contamination. Contaminated cakes should be discarded. Although many contaminants are harmles some are toxic and some can cause disease in humans. Therefore contaminated jars should be thrown out completely or they should be sterilised in a pressure cooker before being emptied out. Contaminated jars should NEVER be emptied before having been sterilised.
