how hard is it to...
    #3034628 - 08/22/04 12:37 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

how hard is it to fuck up so badly that you never even get any signs of colonization (no germination)? say with WBS in quart jars incubating at 86 degrees, and none of the 12 jars show any signs at all. Is the water content a HUGE factor as long as its not gummy wet or completely dry. Is it easy to screw up the PCing part, or innoculation part... What are the places you should look out for... like spraying lysol all around your spore syringes probably isn't good. What would you say is the biggest mistake made that leaves you ending with nothing. What reasons are there for not showing any germination after at least a week and a half in prime conditions...

here's a jar filled up with left over bird seed. (It expands ALOT when you soak it overnight)

my friend had a mycobag that didnt show any signs for two and a half weeks, kept at around 77-82 farenheit. give it a lil more time, you should see signs soon or at least contam

Well I just did/am doing 2 batchs of jars of grain. My S. Thai is in the chamber fruiting right now. That strain only took 10 days to fully colinize. Well, I have this batch of South Americans, and psh, it's been 10 days and only 1 jar has a little spot of myc. ...Soo.....keep waiting.

AFOAF just made some WBS jars recently and accidentally left it simmering for way too long. He didn't drain it for very long after simmering and after PC'ing about half the grains were exploded. The water content was definitely off but the jars are just about fully colonized 2 1/2 weeks after being knocked up with spores (they didn't show anything for close to a week). Patience seems to be the key here

I'm a noob, and only have read about BRP method, but to do that, you are supposed to innoculate down the side of the jar, aren't you?

Perhapse since you did it in the middle, the middle is colonizing and just hasn't reached the outer edges yet?

ps:do you soak that cotton ball in alchohol first? is it wet when you innoculate? Not saying that's good or bad, just wondering if you do.

There are a couple reasons u show no growth.

First how many days has it been?

It can take well up too a month with old spores
If its been past a month it could be one of 2 main reasons. 1st i think that
u could have not gotten any spores into the jars OR u may have had too much
water and gotten bacteria contamination.
If u think that u had too much water u will tell by the smell.
Alot of people say not to smell ur jars cause of some risks or something
but if u take the lid off and its bacteria u will know.
if u dont think its the water u could try putting more spores in or wait awile more.

well the spores i used were about 1-2 weeks old, used 2.5ccs per jar and shook up the jar after injecting. The jars do smell, but it smells like fermented bird seed... nothing bad. Now in a few jars, there are a couple small fuzzy white spots, but its usually only on like one piece of grain.

btw, does cloth medical tape allow air through?

Well umm that fuzzy white stuff is growth. You are showing growth. Just be patient. It starts one one grain then it spreads. When it gets to about 20% colonized shake it all up and spread it around well then wait and colonization will happen quickly.

That's the shitty thing with mother nature...if she knew how badly we wanted the shrooms you would think she could speed up the process!!  Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way....your spores seem to be colonizing extremely slow, or you may have killed your spores...did you inject your jars before they were totally cool, or spray lysol in the viscinity of your syringe?  Just a couple of thoughts, but it sounds like you should be growing soon   Then again, maybe you killed all of your spores except for a few and now they are growing...who knows.  I'd say wait it out...just when you think shit is going downhill, shrooms will surprise you, that is why studying there spores under a microscope are so much fun
