real quick question
    #3034494 - 08/22/04 12:03 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I can't find any wheat straw anywhere. I've looked at wallyworld, target, home depot and still can't find any. However, I did come across some guinea pig bedding made out of aspen wood shavings(or pine or cedar)I was wondering if this stuff will work for bulk substrate. I've included a pic so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about. I have already done a million searches and can't find the answer anywhere. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Oh, it's for P.R.

Craft store often carry mini bales also  cubies are not a woodloving species although I heard they will colonize those compressed stove wood pellets.

I've asked this before but never really got a definitive answer...does straw actually contain much nutrition for mycelium or is it just a medium for it to spread across? I'm guessing it's nutritious since specific straw is supposed to work better...

Wal-Mart, pet supply dept. - Timothy Hay.

Or... Go to a feed store and buy a whole bail of hay for around $6.

Or... find a local farm or stables with horses and ask the owner if you can have a couple of sleeves of hay for mulching your garden. He'll gladly give it to you free. Take some free poo while your there.

Personally, I've done bulk and it's a pain in the ass. Stick with cased grains.

I'll probably always do drugs, so that just contributes to the addiction to The Shroomery... It's a vicious circle of bliss. :tongue2:

Yeah, if you can't find straw, stick with the materials that are available. The beauty of mushroom cultivation is that there are so many different substrates and techniques that all lead to success.
