Bright Orange-Yellow
    #3033701 - 08/21/04 08:09 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Today was the first time I actually took a camera with me hunting. I found a few of these scattered around, but I'm not quite sure exactly what they are. They are by far the brightest color i've seen any mushroom.

The cap is about 1.5-2cm in diameter, and from the less-opened up ones it looks convex. Stems were approximately 2-3cm. Gills were whitish-brown, and the less developed mushrooms seem to be completely orange. I was wayyyyy out in the woods in heavy rain, so i didn't get a chance to take a sporeprint. Was wondering if you guys could help me out =P . I've looked around and tried identifying this for a bit, but my knowledge of mushrooms is very limited; much too limited to properly identify it. Thanks for any help!

Mushroom was found in mid-state NY, about 50 miles north of NYC in heavily shaded woods.

They are pretty darn cool lookin'. I thought I was staring at a chunk of discarded orange peel before I realized what they were.

They look like one of the many bright orange to red Hygrocybe species. They are pretty mushrooms, not poisonous or active, not worth trying to eat.

Happy mushrooming!

I was actually thinking something along those lines after going through  a few hundred pages of mushroom identification photos , but wasn't exactly sure what kind they were.  There was actually a large tuft of Clavulinopsis laeticolor growing about a foot away.  I have it in another photo somewhere.  Thanks for the help. Toxic

From what I've read it's very hard to make species distinctions with the yellow Hygrocybes.
