Lava rocks are just what the sound like. Pieces of a porus rock that comes from volcanos.

You can get lava rocks at any lawn and garden store. I have found them at Wal-Mart and Lowes. Get the small pebbles if you can.

A big 50lb bag was $4-5

Thanks man.  Going to get some today  Anno I like those clay pebbles but they're a bit expensive aren't they?  I found them on ebay for $30 for a 45 lb. bag, not to mention shipping.  Maybe next grow because I like how they're reusable.

I was under the impression that lava rocks are also reusable, you just boil & reuse?

They are re-useable.

Hydroton is expensive ($30 for a 45 lb. bag + $20 S/H) but totally worth it. It has much better characteristics than lava rock, is much smoother/easier to clean, can be sterilized the same way, and looks way cooler.

To save on shipping, you can get it at local hydroponics shops...most likely it will cost you $50 at that point, however. They have to ship it too.

It's worth it, and has many other uses. Great stuff!

Hydroponics stores are rare in some states. So some people may have a hard time finding hydroton or geolite, depending on where you live.

I have had MAD success using lava rocks. They are WAY cheaper than hydraton and are just as easy to use.
