It depends when he picked them, if he harvested it late when the mushrooms started dropping spores, I think you can. Try to get a spore print from one I guess.

If you get some viable spores from the caps then you will need to use agar plates and several transfers, more than likely,in order to obtain a contam free culture that you can transfer to your substrate.

Good Luck!

get a shroom with the cap still on it with the veil closed. Remove the cap and squirt a few drops of water from a sterile syringe into the cap. Suck the water back up. You should be good to go with no contams and no need for agar

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I've been wondering about this one....  What's the difficulty of getting a contam-free spore print from mature fruits you've grown?  It seems like it would be nearly impossible.  I've seen Magash's tek with pics...I don't think he uses agar.  Just PCs the jar with the foil he'll keep the print in, snips the cap with sterile tool, drops the cap in the jar.
But when one puts myc under a microscope, aren't there lots of contam spores that don't germinate on the myc because of the myc's defense?
So, a cap would have lots of contams, if you just put it in a clean (PC'd) jar to let the spores drop, you'd get contams as well, right?
Can someone clarify this one?  I've never tried prints before.  Thanks!  :ooo:
