Lava rock/Aquarium tek question...
    #3031834 - 08/21/04 09:53 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Instead of vermiculite you can use lava rocks, the little red round ones is what I am thinking of. Do they have to be sterilized first? If so, how?

Are any steps required before putting them into the aquarium? What is a good setup using an aquarium? Is there a tek for just making cakes in jars, and then putting the lava rocks/water in the bottom of the aquarium, crumbling a dozen 1/2 pint cakes on top, and then covering in verm? Then covering the top of the aquarium with two layers of seran wrap, with a few holes poked in it with a pin, and opening daily to fan?

Would something like that work? Any tips? Links?

Thanks

The lava rocks come already clean, just rinse and soak them well in clean water.

So crumbling cake over the lava rock (say 4 inches rock, 3" water) directly would be okay? Then cover that with say 1" of verm, and surround the bottom with aluminum foil so the crumbled cakes don't pin outwards?

Someone else will have to answer if that would work or not, I don't see why it wouldn't. Other than the fact that too much moisture on the bottom of the casing layer could invite contams. But, the point of using lava rock and geolite is to avoid the messy clean-up that perlite requires. Doing this, imo, would defeat the purpose of using the lava rock to begin with. Besides, getting gladware containers for your casings are < 3 bux for 4 (depending on size), so why would you wanna go through all the extra trouble of cleaning out the leftover casing material when you can just put it in a container and place the container on the lava rock?

Yeah, you'll want to use the gladware, if not you'll have a big freakin' mess. Check this out:

The casing is just the same as any other....with gladware you're cutting out the jars all together. You let you gladware colonize, take the lid off, throw on a casing and thats it.

I wouldnt use the lava rocks as the bottom of a casing.

They are used to help add air and moisture to the FC. Geolite works better but I cant find it here in the boonies, so I have to use lava rocks.

I use them all the time. The only time you will need to clean them is after they have been used.
