The dry verm barrier will do a fine job of keeping the nasties out of your substrate so you can take the tape off. If you wish to add a little extra protection just put a coffee filter over the jar and secure it with a rubber band. Removing the tape will speed things up a bit by allowing for better air exchange.

Mykey, Tanks alot. I will do as you recommended. I got jealous of Mr. Magash as in his posting 'how does this look?' - after only 9 days he has the pint white.  I am on 4 1/2, and i have q-tip sized white puffy spots.  .  . obviously, if I remove the aluminum foil, remove the tape, coffee filter rubber band tek, i can't stack them.  I assume it is okay that they don't look like magash's pictures (resting on an angle, that is).  I appreciate your teaching help. qwon.

If you are still using tape remove it as soon as you innoculate and leave it off, now it won't make a difference until germination occurs but it's one more thing that could get overlooked. You can leave the foil on if ya want but the tape has to go. Jars only need to be flipped if growth slows noticably, I've had plenty a jar colonize fully without flipping (most) but I have flipped jars that have slowed with good results. GL and welcome qwon

Even his quart jars are colonized in 9 days! I believe Magashs' version is to rather than have a vermiculite barrier up top or fill to the top with substrate ,to leave a gap.The gap allows the substrate to be shaken and allow for a better distribution of spore upon inoculation. The gap also allows him to shake the jars substrate at 25% and 50% - 75% colonization. He also uses tyvek over a nice air hole allowing for great air exchange. His incubation chamber also allows for optimal temp/humdidty during those 9 days. :1up:

FYI jars only need to be shaken once after initial innoc. shake. It is of no benefit to shake twice after the initial innoc. shake. All your doing is setting yourself back a bit. The only time that extra shake is required is on questionable (contam) jars to observe recovery as contamed jars will not recover normally. Just my opinion.
