Anywhere there are trees there are fungi. Trees cannot survive or reproduce without the fungi they have mutualistic relationships with.
As far as active species, you'll probably do best looking on buffalo dung for various Panaeolus species. In general, you're not going to find much in the way of active mushrooms unless you're in the pacific northwest or gulf coast regions.
