Well, they are active and non-poisonous, but I really won't recommend eating any.....they are nasty and bitter. You really need a solid gut to keep even a small amount down.
Also, make sure your don't have the non-active Gymnopilus Ventricosus, as the two are very hard to tell apart.
You can find some pictures Gymnopilus Ventricosus I found here:

the best way i have found to eat big laughing gyms, is by drying them out and powdering them up in a coffee grinder... you can mix the powder with alittle juice, beer, or whatever, or you can chase it after shoting it. we usually eat atleast two teaspoons... one year my brother and i ate an ounce each of them dried. we were pretty warped all day. they really do taste pretty horrible... even for a mushroom. peace.

Well I went back today and what do you know bugs and rotting got to them. I looked under the cap and there was no veil so It wasnt a gym.

gyms in my opinion are a waste to hunt for unless absolutely nothing grows in your area. To the untrained eye people could mistake other mushrooms for them. The taste is awful, and the potency is bleh.

The best way that i have found to consume them is to make a tea. put just enogh water over the Gyms to cover them, and them simmer for 40 minutes or so. Strain them through a cloth; old t-shirts work well. I just tripped on them this weekend and only had to drink seven onces of bitter tea. I took it in shots and chased with water. Eating them can be bad news; they are indigestible and can give you the runs. I hope you find some.
