Getting a wok setup
    #2924168 - 07/24/04 05:34 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Anyon have a wok, I'm not talking about those flat bottom non-stick ones, I'm talking about the real round bottom ones that you have to season yourself? I was thinking of getting those propane burners, like the ones people use to deep fry turkeys, and using the 55,000 BTU's to heat the wok. Anyone have a setup like this? Where do you get those burners from?

i don't have an elaborate wok setup, but i do have an authentic wok and one of those rings you put on the stove so it sets above the flame properly. works just like the real thing.

woks are great. i don't know where to get a setup like that though.

You can get woks with electric bases, Its much better than having to fuck with gas.

They start at under 100 too, so it won't exactly break the bank.

Electric better than gas?!? It takes the electric wok way too long to cool down... remove a real wok from a gas burner and the cooking stops, almost immediately. The electric woks also don't get as hot as a good gas one. I grew up using electric burners and thought gas was a waste... until I was forced to use a gas stove... I would never switch back.

Although nothing can compare to a traditional carbon steel wok over a roaring fire, you can still manage with an electric range. Just buy a flat bottomed wok. They work well, and you can get one that you need to season yourself so that it still has the same great flavor and all the nifty properties of the good ol' traditional woks. It looks just like a normal wok, and only the smallest bit of the bottom is flat- just enough on the outside so that it won't tip over, and barely noticeable on the inside. This is a good site to check out, they have lots of woks and even more things to go with them! Happy hunting
