As far as using the fine verm in the substrate.  I had to add about a 1/2 qt of water/h202 to the substrate after pasteurizing.  That seemed to do the trick.  I did pasteurize for about 5 hours.  That could be the reason for the moisture loss.  I did this in Oven bags....gotta luv em!  I just hope this 100 percent verm casing will work alright.  I wish I could find that coir......I'm too lazy to go to the store...

Quick question on some terminology I'm not quite familiar with: "field capacity" in relation to the casing?
Also, the oven bags you are referring to are just the large plastic turkey bags that you can get at the grocery store?
Thanks...

field capacity is basically when you can take a handful of casing material give it a good squeeze and only have a couple drops come out...I've been told by someone that actual field capacity is more wet than this..I have no idea if that is correct or not but it don't matter...you want it so its how I described above

The oven bags are the large reynolds ones that hold turkeys. I highly reccommend them. It's the easiest way to pasteurize IMO.

Well, I broke down and went to the store and bought some Coir. I have about 1/4 inch Verm casing now. I wonder if it would hurt anything to lay another 1/4 inch of Coir on top of that?

I've used oven bags...I prefer using a pillow case in water...but I don't put it on the stove...I clean one of my laundry tubs...fill it with hot water......then add a big ass pot full of water(and sometimes another half a pot half hour later)......this has worked perfect everytime I've done it and you don't have to worry about burnin the bottom of your bag or measuring temps...even when I did straw on the stove...I stopped using my candy thermometer cause as long as you got the water nice and steamy but not boilin it always worked...oh and I also add a splash of bleach and a sock full of crushed limestone...I tie the stock and put it in the water and it the lime makes it sink

EDIT: I forgot to mention I leave it for about 12 hours...when I drain it the water is cold

Walrus,
What do you think about my "dual layer" casing? 1/4 inch verm, 1/4 inch coir. I just cased today, so no growth has poke through yet?

so you mean its not mixed and both are on the top? should work but I would want the coir on top of the verm...I would just mix it together next time tho

Whoa! Idea here for much easier pasteurization. I just got done doing some laundry before making my way to the CPU to read the latest post. Well I did a load of laundry on hot, and damn was that shit hot. In fact it was a steady 150 degrees! Went down and looked at the heat level on my water heater and it still had 1 level to go, so moved it up and that should take it to 160 or a little bit above.

How convenient is that! homies been messing around with oven bags and pots on the stove pain in the ass if you ask homie. All u got to do is throw it in a pillowcase., shove it in the laundry put it on hot and ad water until it is covered let set and add a little bit of hot water as needed. Move the dial to drain and then watch all that water disappear.let it finish draining in there or take it to the bathroom.

Sorry I posted here but iamthewalrus gave me the idea while reading his post. Thank you!

But then you throw your clothes in there and get crap on em. IO would keep to straw only if oyur using this meathod. Is you turned up your water heater your better off filling up a tub and bouring in boling water till it hits 180 as in mycofiles bulk neglect grows.

TD seems to have had success putting soaked, drained straw in a turkey tin, covering tightly with heavy duty foil and just pasteurizing with the dung/verm in the oven preheated @ 185f for a little over 2 hours.

Don't take advice from him though....he is new to bulk.

I just made up another bin using 1Qt spawn(PESA). I went a little deeper using more straw this time. 1 qt is cutting it close, but I think it'll suffice. 2 days into the casing run on my other bin

As with most substrates you get about 3 flushes, you can get a 4th too but it wont be much. Only trick to keep contams down is practice clean harvest tek then patch and spray with dilluted H2o2.

I was sort of thinking of useing these tubs as just a fruiting chamber.. Make the cakes, cut them in half.. Then put them as tight as possible to fill the gigantor fucking tubs I have..Fill in the holes(can't fit circles perfectly in a square) with some verm.. And just let it chill. What do you all think about it?

Gordo,

That should work just fine. You could even grate them up and make a casing. Someone has done what your wanting to do in the past with good success. Give it a try!

nothing no fan, no nothing. Air circulates thru the top tub's polyfill holes and expels through the bottom tub's holes.

genius IMO

casing is just about done...heres a couple pics

you should feel the heat coming off this bad boy when I open it up!

EDIT:btw I'm loving shredded straw...probably the fastest colonization I've seen...thats a huge casing and it only took 2 qts to get through it all in about a week...I'm plannin to up my spawn rate to 4 qts next go...probably will be done within a couple days
