tyvek also works, but.. when you clean the tubs you make the tyvek dirty. it is really easy to just use some antibacterial soap and a hose and just put new polyfil in the holes. all you have to do is get a big wad of polyfil and stuff the holes. it is really easy, my 2 year old brother can do it and so can you!

of course you can get these results with one tub but thats not the point of it...to me the best part of this is the fact thats its practically a sterile environment if you mist with h202/water right before closing...and without sacrificing air...not only that but if you close the tubs with something permanent(well not so you can't open it but so that its securely shut and you can reuse) you can stack them!(I plan to use a nut and bolt on each corner after drillin a hole...easy and securely shut)...it just seems like a great idea overall the only thing I don't believe is that you need the bag inside...if the casing can hold the water before hand why wouldn't it be able to hold it while in there? plus if you keep your temp the same on the inside and out you shouldn't have much water on the sides anyways...and you will lose SOME of the water through the polyfil...I even plan to add a hole for misting...I believe misting is a key for great pinsets and keeping your mycelium from overlaying or colonizing more than you want...I plan to post some pics so we'll see if I'm right or wrong on this

oh i see i suposs but it would only be clean for the frist flush and then you would have to open it i have seen single tubs that have 5lbs spawned compost in them not get comtamed till the 4-5th flush so i dont see that as a relevant point its more lokie if one would have single tubs than two tubs on top of each other i will have to do two one single tub and one dubble tub the exacted same way to see if there is any real differance

just because you see it sometimes dosen't mean its the norm...keeping a casing contam free is not easy throughout the flushes...also after you've picked your flush and dunked or whatever you would respray with h202/water before closing...so it would be sterile again on top(where mold starts on a casing) you'd just have to make sure you patch the sides so they are touching the edge otherwise you could get a contam there as well...but I dunno about others but I do this on all my casings anyways

i just never see contams till the 3-4th flush and it seems kinda bluky just to worrie about contams i mean they usly get tosed after the 4th flush any ways its just not a space saver but it will get tested to see i suposse if you didnt want to water/watch your shrooms then it would be good but i used to water then daily

It CAN work without the bag. EatU has done it many times both ways, he has posted this tek many times in the OMC and has much experience with it. He's just saying, in his experience it works better with.

Iamthewalrus said:...if the casing can hold the water before hand why wouldn't it be able to hold it while in there?

It would be able to hold the same amount of water, the problem is the water would be unevenly distributed. Even if the perfect moisture level is used in the substrate, it will still evaporate and build up condensation on the walls of the tub. It will drip. And now you have an excess of water along the outer periphery of the substrate, too much water, which makes for an easy attack. The bag helps alleviate this by redirecting the water away from the substrate and providing a barrier between the water and substrate.
Peace

I didn't know he had done it without the bag...I don't know about the condensation tho...whenever I have had a casing that is kept the same temp in and out the sides are dry...and if I open a window or something and its cold out I'll get a lil condensation just on the side where the window is...well I'm gonna try it out how I"m thinking...I've always followed my gut in this hobby...the times I decided to just listen to others and ignore what I thought was best...well I usually end up doing what I was thinking in the end anyways even after trying their way...I'm not saying anyones wrong tho...but I believe this can be done without a bag...but I haven't done it so this is just a theory at this point but I am gonna do it soon and I will post regardless of the outcome..I don't mind to be wrong..especially if it means better grows

i think he's saying that it doesnt necessarily NEED a bag, but just mentioning that the results will be different.

i'm trying it w/o a bag right now and its too early to tell but so far, so good!

well anyways I'm just gonna get my casing going..theres no point in discussin it anymore its time for some action!...I'm doing creeper on straw...4 qts of spawn...2 qts layered with the straw then topped with 2qts of fc verm and millet...ime straw contams the easiest on top and thats also the slowest to colonize...this layer should not only add water but it will speed up colonization and protection against contams...as well as providing a much better surface for putting a casing layer on since its much more even...I plan to put 4 holes in each corner of the bins and a nut and bolt so it is secure and I will be using foil for the sides...but I'm gonna look into paint..I'm not sure if light can get through regular spray paint or not(would probably depend on how many coats as well) would be much easier than dealing with foil...it does the job well but its too easy to rip and its not permanent(and not to mention a pain in the ass to put on a big bin)...tho sometimes its nice to be able to see your casing colonizing on the sides as well as the top especially in the case of how plan to do the straw...so definitely foil for my first go...I'll prolly start another with burma on horse poo but I gotta get some burma jars colonized first ...hmmm actually I may do equador I have some liquid mycelium syringes ready to go and some jars that have been waiting to be innoced...its getting to a point where I gotta do em soon or else I could risk losing the jars before even getting a chance to inject LM or spores

oh and I'm posting my results in this thread...since this is the double bins thread it belongs here...you planning the same psilly?

It has been done without a bag. But a bag makes easier cleanup. I am the walrus, go check this out at nook. I will soon repost it here but for now it is posted in Eatyualive's chamber of shrooms at www.thenook.org

One time,  read on brother you didn't read the whole damn post.  Yeah it is easy to get these results, no doubt.  but i didn't fan shit, spray shit, i just sat on the couch and smoked bud for 2 months and got flushes like that.

whoa nice pics psily im in love

anyway, i have tons of pics of several different methods, ones without bags, ones with bags but please anyone check out the nook with this tek until i post it on this post!

here is one without the bag but this is just straight castings, same principle, nof anning, no spraying, no nothing!

If you want to see a few more of these pics click on my pics at the top near my name in my profile!
