Black hole of Windows driver problems

Well, I've searched everywhere, but apart from reinstalling everything or buying a new sound card, I can't find a solution to this problem.
Audio card is detected, but under multimedia settings, "No playback devices". Tried EVERYTHING. Win98 SE. Anyone wanna take a hack at it?

Been a while since I've worked with windows 98, but have seen this problem before. Does it show up in the device manager tab?

Banging my head on the table here trying to jar my memory. Does 98 have an option to install sound devices from the Multimedia control panel option? I seem to remember that doing a manual install from one of the Multimedia tabs instead of a PnP install would take care of this problem.

Crap...burned one too many brain cells. I've got a board around here with that type of onboard sound card. I'll throw together a box and do a 98 install. Sorry for all the questions and no help.

Looks like I'm running my p2p software on a w2k box using that motherboard.
This is definitely going to be driver related. What's the make of your motherboard and which audio drivers do you currently have installed?

Good advice.
Perhaps he still has the CD that came with the motherboard and merely doesn't realize THATS where the drivers came when the board was new.

Give this a shot.
Look at the sound device in device manager and see what IRQ the system assigned it. Then reboot the system and go into the bios. Go to the PNP settings and mark that IRQ as reserved (or in use by ISA card) this will force it to pick a new IRQ.
The AC'97 cards are known to select well used IRQ's as there primary and cause IRQ conflicts on the system.
If this does not fix the problem, Go into device manager and remove the device, power the system down, remove the card, and power the system up. Once the system is up check the device settings and make sure the card is no longer there. Then power the system down, install the card, and power the system back up. It should re-detect the card and reinstall all the drivers.
If the problem is still not fixed after all this. You will need to paint your face, put on a grass skirt, light some incense, and do the ancient computer remove curse chants while dancing around the computer.

If you did a bios update sometime in the distant past, the drivers on the cd might not work correctly now. Have you downloaded the latest drivers, http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=K7M&Type=Latest and tried reinstalling with them.
Just out of curiosity, did you run the setup program from the cd?
Might try downloading the original audio installer http://www.asus.com/support/download/sel...inx.zip~zaqwedc and run it.

Did you install chipset drivers, or just the driver for your sound card?
If you haven't installed any chipset drivers, I recommend getting the latest VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers and installing them. You could also try this older version which was the last one optimized for Windows 9X. If you haven't done this already, I wouldn't be surprised if it fixes your problem.
Good luck,
